Counseling Notes
Course Choices for 2010-2011All students have submitted their course requests for next year. The principal
mailed home a copy of the course requests for you and your student to check for
accuracy. Given the budgetary
constraints on our master schedule, our priority this year will be to give
students courses to meet their basic graduation requirements. The complex
process of designing the master schedule has already begun. This process is
based on student requests. From
this point on, it may not be possible to change the requested course schedule. Please contact your student's counselor
if you have questions or concerns. STAR
Testing: Please go to the counseling page of the Acalanes Parents Club web site for the schedule of STAR testing.STAR testing will take
place Tuesday, April 20th through Friday, April 23rd. All 9th, 10th and 11th graders will be tested in their 3rd period
class groups. The testing will take place during the morning each day. These comprehensive tests cover the areas of reading, language, math, science
and social studies. STAR tests are important because they give you a chance to
see your child's individual performance as compared to other students in the
state and nation. In the past,
Acalanes students have well exceeded the state performance expectations. Since the state mandates that all students be tested, make-up testing will be
held for students who miss any test days. Make-up testing will take place
during the week that follows the regular testing schedule. Note: Schools
are penalized for students who do not test, so please help us continue our fine
record by making sure that during the days of testing, your son or daughter
gets to school on time and "tests his or her best". On
Wednesday, April 21st students will begin school at 8:00 am instead
of our normal late start. The State does not test seniors. Seniors
should arrive at school daily following the testing block. Senior Awards Night The Awards Night for seniors is
scheduled for Thursday evening, June 3rd. If your senior son or daughter receives an award or
scholarship based on academics, leadership, or service, please encourage them
to inform Joan Karr in the College and Career Center. Invitations to the Awards Night are emailed to participants and
their parents only.

College and Career Center
The East Bay College Connection College Fair will be held at
St. Mary's College on Sat. May 8 from 1:00-4:30. The EBCC attracts over 150 colleges each year to the St.
Mary's campus for the college fair and provides breakout sessions on topics
such as admissions and financial aid as well as a College Counseling
Center. The EBCC is a perfect
opportunity to look at colleges, talk to admissions officers, and become more
knowledgeable about the process. I
recommend the fair for sophomores and juniors. Details of the day can be found at: www.stmarys-ca.edu/ebcc.

Days 12:45- 1:00pm The Spring Dance Concert is Thursday April 29th at 7:30pm in the theater at Miramonte High School. _____________________________________________________________________________ Congratulations to Bella Voce and Chamber Singers on a successful Spring Choir Tour! Both groups traveled to Chicago, April 15th through 18th, for the annual spring tour. The tour included Clinics with Marjorie Johnston, assistant conductor of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and Dr. Lee Kesselman, Director of Choral Activities at College of Dupage in Glen Ellen. Dr. Kesselman is also a composer and many of the students on the tour have performed music by him over their time in the choirs. The had a public performance at Navy Pier on the Family stage to an enthusiastic crowd of tourists and families. They attended performances by the Blue Man Group, a production of "La Boheme" at Northeastern Illinois University, and attended a Cub's game at Wrigley field. They also sampled the culinary culture of Chicago and saw a lot of the architecture that makes the city so unique. They concluded their tour by singing at a service at Parkridge Community Church on Sunday morning to rave reviews by those in attendance. One individual commented that they had heard many high school choral groups and had not heard any of the previous groups perform at such a high level. Special thanks to the parent chaperones who graciously helped supervise the students and volunteered their time to make the tour such a success. Those individuals were; Katie Vanhoven, Teresa Caldwell, Jen Woodman, Lori Altabet, Mike Quinn, and Dr. Harry MacDannald. Thanks to all for a wonderful tour! Bruce LengacherDirector of Choral Activities_______________________________________________________________________ Mallory Craig-Karim won first place in the Mount Diablo Peace and Justice Center annual Art competition. Her Art will be on the cover of their 2011 color calendar. It will also be traveling in an Art display at all the Contra Costa libraries. Congratulations, Mallory!

should arrive at Acalanes in time to board the bus at 6:00 pm. The
buses will take them to Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton. The
buses shall return to Acalanes between 11:30-11:45pm. Thank you to everyone who has helped put this night together for our Juniors. We are looking forward to a memorable evening. Help
ensure that your child has a safe, alcohol/drug free, and enjoyable
evening!! There will be a breathalyzer before and after the prom.
Below are few items you might want to review with your students. Prom Night 101: *Discuss the school's prom rules as well as the consequences of violating them. *Discuss provisional driving rules - they still apply on Prom night. *Make sure your child has a plan for the evening, including before and after the prom. Have your teen commit to the plan in advance and make sure you know the plan. *If
your child has more than one party invitation, pick one for the
pre-prom and one for the post-prom. It is safest not to party hop. *Take stock of the alcohol in your home. *Communicate with other parents. A perfect chance to get to know others! *STAY UP UNTIL YOUR CHILD RETURNS HOME.
