Measure A
Got Ballot? Ballots arrived last week. Find yours, mark Yes on Measure A, and mail it back today!
Recent local elections have won or lost by just a few votes. Don't give up on Acalanes. Please vote Yes on Measure A today! Did You Know... why 7th period is such an important opportunity? Without 7th period,
it's difficult for students to take anything more than the minimum to
graduate. Many students will be reluctant to push themselves to take AP
classes since reduced class sections mean they will not be able to drop
the class if necessary. 7th period allows electives - and
the opportunity for children to find their passion, build skills, and
achieve meaningful success. Measure A will bring back the rewards of 7th period to our students. Have You Heard? "As I sign up for creative writing for next year and my other friends sign up for additional science classes, we worry about
not getting the opportunity to take them. Budget cuts can be the
difference between kids spending their time in classes only for
graduation or in ones they're really passionate about taking." - Lizzie
N., sophomore

Counseling Notes
Report CardsThe third
quarter grade reports will be mailed home on Friday, April 16th. Course Choices for 2010-2011All students have submitted their course requests for next year. The principal
mailed home a copy of the course requests for you and your student to check for
accuracy. Given the budgetary
constraints on our master schedule, our priority this year will be to give
students courses to meet their basic graduation requirements. The complex
process of designing the master schedule has already begun. This process is
based on student requests. From
this point on, it may not be possible to change the requested course schedule. Please contact your student's counselor
if you have questions or concerns. STAR
Testing: Please go to the counseling page of the Acalanes Parents Club web site for the schedule of STAR testing.STAR testing will take
place Tuesday, April 20th through Friday, April 23rd. All 9th, 10th and 11th graders will be tested in their 3rd period
class groups. The testing will take place during the morning each day. These comprehensive tests cover the areas of reading, language, math, science
and social studies. STAR tests are important because they give you a chance to
see your child's individual performance as compared to other students in the
state and nation. In the past,
Acalanes students have well exceeded the state performance expectations. Since the state mandates that all students be tested, make-up testing will be
held for students who miss any test days. Make-up testing will take place
during the week that follows the regular testing schedule. Note: Schools
are penalized for students who do not test, so please help us continue our fine
record by making sure that during the days of testing, your son or daughter
gets to school on time and "tests his or her best". On
Wednesday, April 21st students will begin school at 8:00 am instead
of our normal late start. The State does not test seniors. Seniors
should arrive at school daily following the testing block. Senior Awards Night The Awards Night for seniors is
scheduled for Thursday evening, June 3rd. If your senior son or daughter receives an award or
scholarship based on academics, leadership, or service, please encourage them
to inform Joan Karr in the College and Career Center. Invitations to the Awards Night are emailed to participants and
their parents only.

Music and Arts
I would like to commend and thank all the participating students for making this year's 2010 Band & Orchestra Tour such a success. They were on time, responsible, and helpful and supportive to their fellow students and staff when assistance was needed. I applaud the students for their flexibility, patience, hard work, and good humor. I want to especially thank the Chaperones (Tracy Davis, Craig Fixler, Joe Griebstein, Bob & Kathi Mooney, and Kelly Mooney) for their immense help and supervision of our students. Special thanks goes to Mr. Davis for driving the cargo van that held much of our luggage.
The instrumental clinics we had with the music professors at California State University Long Beach (Dr. Joan deAlbuquerque and Dr. Johannes Muller-Stosch), Chapman University (Dr. Robert Frelly), and the Magic Music Days Soundtrack Workshop at Disneyland (Mr. Tom Griffin & Mr. Doug Strawn) were positive, enjoyable and memorable. The Friday night concert at the spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall with the LA Phil was also an inspiring highlight of the trip. And of course, the day for the students at Disneyland and California Adventure was fun for all.
Student travel with a music education emphasis is important and educationally valid in our music curriculum. It both encourages the students to stretch themselves musicality under new performance and rehearsal conditions, and promotes camaraderie within the ensembles and department. These curricular activities encourages ensemble cohesion and creates a positive bond between the students. Thank you again for your support of our programs.
Sincerely,
Norman Dea Director of Instrumental Music _________________________________________________________________________ Acalanes Dance Department The Acalanes Dance

LASF
A Message from
the Acalanes High School Parents Club
Dear Acalanes Parents- Yes, it's that time again... the LASF Phonathonis fast
approaching with the goal of raising $1.5 million this year to support
our students at Acalanes High School and the Lafayette School District. The money raised in the springtime is spent to benefit every student at
Acalanes next year. It is well known that LASF provides key funding for
our visual and performing arts programs and for our science classrooms, too. Did you know LASF also helps pay for counselors and librarians, and funds
library research databases and classroom technology purchases? The Acalanes Parents Club and LASF work closely to make sure
your donated dollars are spent to the greatest benefit of all Acalanes
students. We want you to know that even with the passage of Measure A,
our school will continue to need direct financial support from our parent
community.
Can we count on you to help out? LASF asks
a donation of $500 per student, more if you are able. Avoid that
Phonathon call by making your pledge or donation before April 21. · Donate online at www.lasf.org· Call the LASF office at 925.299.0644 · Drop off your envelope (in your LASF annual report) at the LASF office at 3450-A Golden Gate Way By working together, LASF, the Parents Club and our whole
community have the opportunity to preserve and build on the excellence Acalanes
High School enjoys today. Thank you for your support! Best Regards, Astrida Lalor
