Dear Acalanes HS Parents,

Following are few important reminders so please take a moment to read through them.

To the parents of all Eleventh grade students:

On behalf of the California Department of Education, State Board of Education, and California State University, I am asking for your support by encouraging your student to participate in the Early Assessment Program (EAP) in English-language arts and Mathematics. The EAP provides students, their families, and high schools with early "signals" about students' readiness for college-level English and Mathematics.  In addition, the EAP identifies a student's need for additional preparation in these areas while still enrolled in high school. Students who are determined to be "college-ready" on the basis of the EAP are exempt from the California State University's placement tests in English and Mathematics and move directly into college-level classes upon enrollment without having to take remedial classes.  Students who are not "college-ready" at the end of eleventh grade have the opportunity to strengthen their skills in twelfth grade. While we would like all juniors to participate, we recommend that juniors planning to apply to one of California State University's campuses take advantage of this program.
All juniors received information regarding the EAP in their English 3 classes.  Please discuss the information with your student, and encourage him/her to participate in the EAP by signing up and attending the 45 minute essay portion, which will be administered on Wednesday, March 10th at 7:30 am, in the Cafeteria and answering the 15 multiple choice questions in English and Mathematics given during STAR testing in April.  Students can sign up for the essay in the Counseling office.  The deadline is March 4th.

If you have any questions regarding the EAP, please visit the CSU Web site at http://www.calstate.edu/eap or contact Terri Humann, Testing Technician, at 925-280-3970 ext 7129.

To all parents of current and new student drivers:

If you have or will have a new driver in the family, you are strongly encouraged to attend the CHP sponsored driving class Drive Smart- Stay Safe that will be presented at Acalanes free of charge. This program  is for parents and students to attend together.  It is designed to reduce the number of teenage injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions. See the Acalanes Parent Club News for more details.

This event will be held on Wednesday March 3rd , 5:45-8:00 pm in the Cafeteria.
To register, email: LGSENDME@SBCGLOBAL.NET with "Drive Smart" written in subject line.  Include parent and student name and grade.

To all parents - a message from our Student Leadership Diversity Board:

International Week is an important part of the Acalanes tradition. It is a week of celebrating cultural diversity, global awareness, and acceptance of other people and traditions. The week is full of fun lunchtime activities celebrating cultures from around the world, and a big International Night with food, music, performers, and a fashion show. We are planning to sell the food at International Night, and donate the proceeds to the charity. This year, we are donating to Partners in Health. Partners in Health is an organization that provides medical care to countries in need around the world. They have been working in Haiti for the past twenty years, and they could use our help now more than ever. The week is coming up soon,  March 15-19, and we would really appreciate your help. International Night is March 18, and as you are probably aware it is impossible to pull off without the help of dedicated parents. Food is a huge part of the night, and we have been searching continuously for restaurants that are able to donate. However, because of the rough economy, many have rejected us. We now look to generous parents and students to donate any kind of food or drinks for the night. Last year, the majority of food donated was from Acalanes parents, and it was some of the best food we ever had. Whether it is a recipe passed down from generations ago, or a store bought item from Safeway, every little thing counts. This is an opportunity for you to make our International Night a success. If you have any questions or concerns, or would be interested in donating, please email CChallacombe@acalanes.k12.ca.us as soon as possible.
