Student Activities
Thank you all for contributing to a successful Homecoming!
Congratulations to the Seniors and everyone who participated, we raised
over $1000 for various charities. It is currently Community Service
Week and the week is full of great events. Tuesday at lunch we will be
making blankets for the Linus Project, Wednesday students can pack
lunches for Glide Memorial and Friday we will be packing hygiene kits.
It would be great if everyone could bring in common soaps, disposable
razors, and any toiletries for Friday's activity. Collection bins will
be placed in front of the Main Office. Thursday will feature the
Community Service Fair with over 25 charities/organizations coming to
visit. It is a great time for students to sign up and get community
service requirements fulfilled. Show your thanks and get involved!

Counseling Notes
Peer
Tutoring and Academic Support: Encourage
your students to take advantage of all the extra help available at Acalanes in
Peer Tutoring and in the Academic Support Center located in the library. Peer tutoring is available on a drop-in
basis daily at lunch, during 7th period, and after school until
4pm. Highly qualified junior and
senior students work under the supervision of Peer Tutoring coordinators Fran
Taylor and Mary McCosker. The
Academic Support Center is open Monday-Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 in the
library. Acalanes teachers staff
the center and provide tutoring in math.
Counselor
Letters of Recommendation: Most private
colleges require letters of recommendation from teachers and from a counselor (often
called the "school report").
Students should request letters from teachers well in advance of their
application deadlines. Students
who will need a letter of recommendation from their counselor are required to
complete on Naviance the Student Statement and Resume, and have their
parents/guardians complete the Parent Statement.

Acalanes Dance Class
As a surprise at the end of
the homecoming rally last Thursday, the Acalanes Dance Class performed Thriller
and did a fantastic job. Also I directed our 1st Staff-Dance/Skit
which was a hit at the Homecoming Rally. In combination with the dance class
the staff came out and performed a reprise of Thriller and went into a dance
off between Count Chocula and one of our staff members dressed as a Campo
student. All participants did a fantastic job and I am very proud of the
dancers and staff working together on a terrific dance/skit. We were successful
by surprising the entire student body. Christi Costa Acalanes Dance Teacher

Flu
Update: How long is my child infectious?
Because the H1N1 virus is still "novel",
there is not yet a definitive answer, but recommendations are based on data
from the seasonal influenza virus infection. According to the CDC, infected
persons are assumed to be shedding virus from one day prior to illness onset
until resolution of symptoms. In general, persons with novel influenza A (H1N1)
virus infection should be considered potentially infectious from one day before
to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might
be infectious for up to 10 days.
This highlights the importance diligent hygiene and of
keeping your child home from school, extracurricular activities, and social
activities during the acute phase of illness. Also remember that the kids need
time to recover and are more vulnerable to illness for a while, so HELP them
keep their activities and schedule loads restricted for a while.
Lastly, AS ALWAYS, keep them well-fed (healthy breakfast,
lunch, family dinner and snacks), well-hydrated, 9 hours of sleep, and
appropriate physical activity.
Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!
