President's Message
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who voted last week in support of Measure G. I was surprised to learn that the majority of our voters do not have children enrolled in our k-12 schools, yet 74% voted to pass Measure G! Thank you to Mr. Tom Mulvaney for educating us all on the Parcel Tax and working so hard on this campaign. The parcel tax will allow us to fund 70 full time teachers, or, enough teachers to staff one high school. Thank you!
It was great seeing so many of you at this months Friday Forum. Thank you to Mr. John Stockton for setting aside the time to come meet with us and answer our questions.
Directory Supplements are still available for pick up in the main office. You must be a Parents Club member to sign one out. If you have not yet joined Parents Club, it's not too late. Please contact me at AstridaLalor@sbcglobal.net for more information.

Counseling Notes
Peer
Tutoring and Academic Support: Encourage
your students to take advantage of all the extra help available at Acalanes in
Peer Tutoring and in the Academic Support Center located in the library. Peer tutoring is available on a drop-in
basis daily at lunch, during 7th period, and after school until
4pm. Highly qualified junior and
senior students work under the supervision of Peer Tutoring coordinators Fran
Taylor and Mary McCosker. The
Academic Support Center is open Monday-Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 in the
library. Acalanes teachers staff
the center and provide tutoring in math.
Counselor
Letters of Recommendation: Most private
colleges require letters of recommendation from teachers and from a counselor (often
called the "school report").
Students should request letters from teachers well in advance of their
application deadlines. Students
who will need a letter of recommendation from their counselor are required to
complete on Naviance the Student Statement and Resume, and have their
parents/guardians complete the Parent Statement.

Class of 2010
Congratulations to the Class of 2010 for a fabulous Homecoming
Week, filled with lots of Lucky Charms. A huge thank you to our many
parent volunteers, who donated materials for hall decorating, brought
food to the Sunday potluck, brought more food for our booth decorating
snack day, helped with dodgeball, and worked/donated food for the final
concession of the season. We couldn't do any of this without you.
We'd
also like to acknowledge and thank two parent volunteers who gone above
and beyond to help the Class of 2010 through four amazing Homecoming
weeks -- from Freshman That 70s Class, to Sophomore Aquarium, to Junior
Star Wars, to Senior Lucky Charms, Ann Pinedo and Jill Dair have
provided great support and guidance to our Class of 2010 students.
Thank you both so much for jumping in and helping out! Get ready for Grad Night!
The Grad Night party for seniors is a longstanding Acalanes tradition that
your son/daughter will not want to miss. It's an entire night of food,
entertainment, dancing, games, prizes and a last chance to be together as a
class before heading out on their new adventures! Admission tickets are
$190 and can be purchased at the AHS webstore http://acalaneshs.revtrak.net/tek9.asp
(click on class of 2010) or you can drop a check off at the office (made out to AHS Grad
Night).
We also need a permission slip for each student attending the party. The
form needs to be signed by the student as well as BOTH parents. It is
available on the parents' club website at:
http://acalanesparentsclub.homestead.com/SeniorClass10.html.
You can drop
off the completed forms in the office (look for the Grad Night box).
Parents can also get in on the fun by volunteering to help organize, plan,
decorate or chaperone. Questions? Ready to volunteer? Contact our
event
co-chairs Nancy Falk (nancy.falk@gmail.com) and
Vangie Long
(vangielong@yahoo.com)

"How Drugs Hijack the Teenage Brain: Do you really know how marijuana and alcohol interfere with the learning that is supposed to take place during the teenage years?" A Parent Education Evening with Ralph Cantor, Tuesday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the MUR at Stanley. Adolescence is the time when teens are supposed to be working on self identity, dealing with stress, boredom, emotional growth, intellectual development and learning to socialize with others. Join us at Stanley for an informative evening and Q & A with esteemed Drug Educator, Ralph Cantor and the Stanley Counseling Staff. Sponsored by the Stanley PTA. _____________________________________________________________________________________
Your Adolescent and Drugs· All parents and high school students in other grades are encouraged to attend an evening presentation of the same material. · STUDIES reveal that the vast majority (over 80%) of freshmen age students have not yet participated in risky health behaviors, yet by the time they are juniors, participation is well over 60%.
