President's Message
Homecoming
week is just around the corner. Please be sure to pay special attention
to the "Student Activities" section in the newsletter for all the
Homecoming news. Please Vote on November 3rd. Measure G renews
and continues the existing parcel tax in the Acalanes Union High School
District. There is no increase to the tax rate you currently
pay. Since it was first approved in 1991, this local tax has raised
stable, reliable funds for all of the district's comprehensive high
schools - Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte.
Please cast your
Yes vote for Measure G. Our students are counting on you!

Measure G
What to do if you still have your absentee
ballot
Election Day for Measure G is only one week away. If
you still have your absentee ballot, it may be too late to put it in the
mail. It must ARRIVE in Martinez by Election Day. The postmark does not
count.
To make sure your vote counts, you can take it to any
polling place in the district. You can check on the location of the polling
place nearest your home right here http://www.cocovote.us/content.aspx?id=84.
If you have recently found that you will be out-of-town on
Election Day you can have a relative or spouse deliver your ballot for you.
To do so, place the ballot in the return envelope, seal it and sign the
outside, acknowledging that you are entrusting your ballot to a relative or
your spouse.
Measure G must win with a two-thirds majority. Every vote
is critical - especially yours. Learn more - and endorse Measure G - at www.AboutMeasureG.com

parents/guardians complete the Parent Statement.
The Student
Statement, Parent Statement, Resume are to be filled out on Naviance and are due

Acalanes Sports
The football team seems to always win or
lose in the last minute of every game this season. Friday was no
exception as Tyler Caldwell threw a strike to Lucas Levine for a 40-yard
touchdown pass with 18 seconds left in the game to defeat Miramonte HS 14-7.
The water polo teams continue to roll as the boys defeated Alhambra HS 18-4,
and the girls did likewise 14-0. The girls continued their hot week with
an 8-1 victory over Sir Francis Drake HS. The girls volleyball team was
defeated by Las Lomas HS, but brought newfound energy through their Fight
Against Breast Cancer fundraising. They generated great support through
the week and the evening of the game.
This week, the football team travels to
Dublin HS on Friday, with the JV at 4:30, and varsity at 7:00. The water
polo teams play at Dougherty Valley HS on Wednesday, with JV girls at 4:00, varsity
girls at 5:00, varsity boys at 6:00, and JV boys at 7:00. The girls
volleyball team plays at Campolindo HS on Tuesday, and at Alhambra HS on
Thursday, with freshmen at 4:00, JV at 5:00, and varsity at 6:00. The
girls tennis team has a busy week hosting Las Lomas HS on Monday, Miramonte HS
on Tuesday, and going to Dougherty Valley HS on Thursday, with all matches
starting at 3:30. The cross country team has a meet against Dublin HS and

_____________________________________________________________________________________________ From The School Nurse
Greetings from Acalanes School Nurse Dvora Citron:
Annual 10th Grade Vision and Hearing Screening
A major focus of School Nursing Services is the early detection and
correction of health problems, as well as the prevention of illness and
disability. Good vision and hearing are essential for academic and
athletic success, as well as for the development of self-esteem, communication
and socialization.
AUHSD credentialed school nurses will soon begin conducting annual
Hearing and Vision Screening. All Acalanes sophomore students will be screened
during their 10th grade English class on either Tuesday, November
10th, and Tuesday, November 17th, 2009. This annual
comprehensive screening process enables the credentialed School Nurses working
with a large group of students to identify those who are at-risk for a
particular condition. It includes health education in hearing and vision
conservation, screening, referral, and follow up to provide assistance for
identified vision and/or hearing related issues. Each year approximately
10% of Acalanes students are recommended for further evaluation.
Parents interested in volunteering to assist with Hearing and Vision
screening:
During many of the periods we have to screen a large group of students
for Hearing and Vision in less than one hour. Having parent volunteers
enables us to proceed through the screening much more efficiently and smoothly
with less interruptions. If you are able to help out for any of the
shifts listed below, please go this link and complete the form and I will be in
touch with you. Thank you so much for your help and support.

The Flu is Flying Around!!!
Many Acalanes students have been sick with
viral illness/influenza. Please make sure not to send your student to school
if they have had a fever WITHIN 24 hours. What does that mean? To return to
school, your student should have NO fever for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
(Tylenol, Advil, Aspirin). Vaccination for Seasonal Flu and H1N1 is
recommended by the Academy
of American Pediatrics
for school-age children and adolescents, but each family should consult with their
primary care physician to make the right choice for them. Take precautions by
washing hands properly, avoiding ill people, covering your nose and mouth with
tissue or sleeve/elbow when you cough or sneeze, discard used tissues in trash
(then wash hands!), and do not share food drink, or utensils. Please see the
School Nurse Blackboard website for more information.

LASF
In Memory of Robert Wood
Robert
Newell Wood, one of the three founders of LASF, passed away on October 21.
He is remembered for the many ways in which he offered his time and talents to
improving community life, and in particular for his contributions to public
education in Lafayette. In founding the Lafayette Arts & Science
Foundation, his greatest wish was that LASF would provide all children in
Lafayette with a public education that would rival the finest private schools.
We are grateful for his vision.
For details
on his memorial service, please see:

Simplify Your Life
Is
spring cleaning still on your "to do" list? LASF has a
suggestion....let us take your gently used extras - cameras, laptops,
handbags, video game consoles, etc. - and convert them to cash for our
schools. LASF is partnering with the "I Sold It on eBay" store to
sell donated items. LASF gets proceeds from the sale and you - our
donors - get a timely tax deduction. It's simple. We are
collecting items on Sunday, November 15 from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Acalanes High
School parking lot. A more detailed list of items we would like to sell along
with a list of things we cannot take, can be found at our website, www.lasf.org.
Thank You from the Fall Phonathon
Crew
Thank
you to everyone who participated in our Fall Phonathon - both callers and
those who answered the call to donate. Special thanks to Bonnie Cornell, who
spearheaded the effort that garnered over $49,000 in pledges, all of which will
be spent at our school sites during the 2009-2010 school year. Donation
envelopes are in the mail or you can donate on line at www.lasf.org
