Measure G
The Postmark Won't Count for Measure G
If you are voting-by-mail in the November 3rd election make sure your
ballot is mailed by Saturday, October 24. The ballot MUST arrive in
Martinez by Election Day - the postmark does not count.
Measure G renews the Acalanes High School District's existing parcel
tax with no increase. These stable, reliable, local funds are critical
to the future of our local high schools. Deep state budget cuts have
already forced the district to cut its budget by more than $6 million -
a loss of over $1,000 per student. A
failure to renew the parcel tax will compound these losses - forcing
the district to eliminate up to 70 teaching positions and increase
class size for all students.
Support our schools - vote YES on G - mail your absentee ballot or vote YES on Election Day November 3rd! Learn more - and endorse Measure G - at www.AboutMeasureG.com

Counseling Notes
Seniors: Counselors visited Government/Economics
classes in September to discuss the importance of senior courses, graduation
status, and the college application process. During early October counselors will continue to meet
individually with each senior.
These meetings will focus on graduation status, requirements, and post-graduate
plans.
Transcripts: At the time of application, students do
not send a
transcript to UC or CSU campuses. Transcripts will be requested later. Private schools and out-of-state public
schools request a transcript be sent with the application materials. The transcript fee is $3.00 per
transcript.

Homecoming Hall Decorating
Hall
decorating will start at 10:30 on Sunday, November 1. Please encourage
your freshman to join the fun. Lunch will be served at 1:00 - provided
by some great volunteer cooks - and snacks will be provided as well.
Please start saving your cardboard to make props for the hallway. The
theme will be announced the week before Homecoming. Homecoming Dance
As freshman parents, you might want to know a little information
about the Homecoming Dance. I surveyed some parents with upper classmen
and this is what I learned. Some kids take a date, but several will go
with groups of friends. Girls wear nice dresses and boys wear
khaki's and button down shirts - coats and ties are optional.
As one Mom put it, "church clothes" - no jeans. It was also
suggested that you could host a group of kids for a taco or pizza dinner before
the dance - fun and economical. The kids will get information about
tickets for the dance at school. _______________________________________________________________________________ Questions? Contact your Class of 2013 Liaisons: Kim Greer kvgreer@yahoo.com Amy Goodheart heart39@comcast.net Bonnie Cornell bonnie_cornell@comcast.net Patty Gonser bpgonser@comcast.net

Healthy Choices/Challenge Success/Parent Ed
Red Ribbon Week is October 19 - 25!
The AHS Health Council (a student group on campus) will be
providing students with information and activities during the week. Your student may come home with a
pencil with the catchy phase, "
" on it or they may play Alcohol Bingo at lunch learning important facts
about drinking alcohol. What does
it all mean?
The purpose of Red Ribbon Week (RRW) is to remind the
general public that alcohol and other drug use is a significant problem in
America and to get people talking about efforts to curb drug use. So, don't
wait any longer to talk to your teen.
Parents and students can use RRW to start a conversation
about drugs and alcohol abuse and their expectations of each other. Dvora Citron, our school nurse has
great information on her blackboard site
--
Check it out! And one other
site to look at is www.theantidrug.com.
Do's and Don'ts
so what works? According to Kaiser Permanente and the Department of Health and
Human Services, here are some effective approaches:
UNDERSTANDING: ("I realize you are facing
decisions about...")
FIRM: ("As your parent, I cannot allow you to
engage in harmful activities.")
SUPPORTIVE: ("I'm here to help. Let's talk about
ways to deal with this issue.")
SELF-EXAMINING: (Ask yourself, "Am I a good role model
for alcohol/drug use?")
If you have any additional tips, please
contact me at melodyhoweweintraub@gmail.com.

The first
Healthy Choices Committee meeting will be held on Friday, October 23 at
7:30 a.m. in the Faculty Dining Room on campus. All interested parents
are invited to attend. We would appreciate your input.

This program, developed by the CHP, is for parents and teens to attend together. It is designed to reduce the number of teenage injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions. You will learn about the dangers faced by young drivers, the driving restrictions placed on drivers under the age of 18, defensive driving, and strategies parents can use to reduce the chances of their child becoming involved in a collision. Space is limited, to sign up for the class, please email: LGSENDME@SBCGLOBAL.NET with "Drive Smart" written in subject line. Include parent and student names and grade. Please notify one week prior if cancelling. Thanks, Lynn Gitomer, Parent Ed. ______________________________________________________________________________________________
Challenge Success Stanley
principal, David Schrag will be leading a follow-up discussion about
Dr. Ken Ginsburg's visit to Stanley at his upcoming Town Hall, October
30, 8:30 a.m. at Stanley School. For those of you who purchased his
book, Building Resilience in Children and Teens, we will be discussing
Chapter 3, and also Chapters 26-29. If you don't have the book, you can

LASF Simplify Your Life
Is
spring cleaning still on your "to do" list? LASF has a
suggestion....let us take your gently used extras - cameras, laptops,
handbags, video game consoles, etc. - and convert them to cash for our
schools. LASF is partnering with the "I Sold It on eBay" store to
sell donated items. LASF gets proceeds from the sale and you - our
donors - get a timely tax deduction. It's simple.
We
are collecting items on Sunday November 15 from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Acalanes
High School parking lot. A more detailed list of items we would like to sell
along with a list of things we cannot take, can be found at our website,
www.lasf.org. Please tell your friends and neighbors, too. Simplify your life
by clearing out those extra possessions and letting LASF convert them into $$$
for our schools.
Every Child. Every
