Principal's Message

Greetings Acalanes High School Community,

As the summer leaves us and we enter the fall season I am happy to report that it has been a very good start of the school year. The school's API scores improved by 6 points to a score of 902. These results are a tribute to our teachers and staff, our students and to you, the supportive parents. Our students are fully absorbed in their classes. The athletic teams are performing well and are busy with the start of the league competitions. Many clubs have been organized by our students to provide gatherings and activities for students with interests ranging from Ultimate Frisbee to philosophical and political discussions. Our first performing arts production is coming up. The drama class is putting on a performance of "Dracula". Student Government is currently focusing on diversity and tolerance by organizing various lunch time activities and tolerance workshops in the classrooms. They will be tackling homecoming at the end of October.

Academic Support is being provided in the Library, Monday through Thursday from 3:15 - 4:15. AHS Math teachers are available to help students struggling in all levels of math. If your child is having difficulties in his/her math class please encourage them to take advantage of this program. Thanks to LASF and Parent Club, Academic Support is free to our students.

Thank you to all that attended our Sporting Goods sale on Saturday, October 3rd. It was a success and we look forward to working with the Parent Club on continuing this as a new tradition at Acalanes.

Please remember that we will not have school on Monday, October 12th. All the offices will be closed on that day.

If you have or will have a new driver in the family, you are strongly encouraged to attend the
CHP sponsored driving class Drive Smart- Stay Safe that will be presented at Acalanes free of charge.
This program is for parents and students to attend together.  It is designed to reduce the number of teenage injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions. See the Acalanes Parent Club News for more details.

Thank you for reading.

Thank you both very much.

Sports Sale is behind us. Hopefully many of you were able to stop by and browse and buy. The hope is to grow this into a highly anticipated and well attended event over the coming years A tremendous amount of time and energy went into the sale and many thanks go to Sue Thoren who worked so tirelessly on this.

Counseling Notes

Progress Reports:
The first quarter progress reports will be mailed home on Friday October 2.  Progress reports may be sent home for a variety of reasons.  You will definitely receive a progress report if your student is earning a grade below a 'C-' in any class.  The first quarter ends on Friday, November 2nd.  First quarter grade reports will be mailed home on Friday, November 6th.

PSAT:
The PSAT will be given on October 17, 2009 at 8:00 am at Acalanes High School.  Register online, beginning September 21st through October 11th on the AHS Web Store. The cost is $24.50. Student Study Guides are available in the Counseling Office.

The PSAT measures critical reading, math problem-solving (including Algebra and Geometry), and writing skills. It is a practice test for the SAT Reasoning test. Juniors planning to attend a four year college should take the PSAT.  Sophomores who have completed Geometry may consider taking the test.

Room assignments are posted on the Counseling Office window the Friday prior to the test.  Students taking the PSAT should plan to report to their assigned rooms at 8:00 the morning of the test with a photo ID, two sharpened #2 pencils, and a calculator.

Click here for the AHS Webstore: http://acalaneshs.revtrak.net/tek9.asp

Seniors:  Counselors visited Government/Economics classes in September to discuss the importance of senior courses, graduation status, and the college application process.  During early October counselors will continue to meet individually with each senior.  These meetings will focus on graduation status, requirements, and post-graduate plans.

Transcripts:  At the time of application, students do not send a transcript to UC or CSU campuses. Transcripts will be requested later.  Private schools and out-of-state public schools request a transcript be sent with the application materials.  The transcript fee is $3.00 per transcript.
Request a Transcript
1.  Request all transcripts through Naviance Family Connection
2.  Print out the Transcript Status page
3.  Bring the following to the Counseling Office:
Transcript Status page
$3.00 per transcript
Stamped, addressed envelopes for all schools NOT on the Common Application (transcripts for schools on the Common Application will be sent electronically) - do not fill in a return address
*  When you come to the Counseling Office you must know which schools are on the Common Application (find out at www.commonapp.org)

Letters of Recommendation:  Most private colleges require letters of recommendation from one or two teachers and from a counselor (sometimes called a School Report).  Students should request letters from their teachers well in advance of their application deadlines.  Students requesting a letter from his/her counselor need to complete the Student Statement, Parent Statement, and Resume on Naviance Family Connection.
The deadline for the counselors is October 1st for Early Action and November 1st for Regular Decision.

Fundraising and eScrip

Acalanes has some exciting news!   We've just joined the eScrip Recycling Program. This program is FREE and provides a convenient location for collecting laser, inkjet cartridges, used cell phones, iPods and other Mp3 players  and laptops while raising funds for our school.

How the program works:  The collection bin clearly marked and accessible during normal school hours, will be placed just inside the main office. You can drop off your recyclable cell phones, ink cartridges, iPods or other Mp3 players and laptops whenever it's convenient for you. Periodically, our school will mail the items collected at our school to the eScrip Recycling offices. eScrip Recycling will then deposit funds electronically in our groups account!!!

Did you know that every second of every day nine ink cartridges are thrown away? Help us turn this waste into CASH! Please donate your cell phones, cartridges, iPods and laptops by placing them in the collection bin found inside the main office.  What a perfect time to clean off your work area or junk drawer.

This program will not be successful without the support of the community and people like you. Thank you for your help in recycling
.

Measure G
What if one local high school had to close?

Measure G is on the November 3rd ballot to renew and continue the Acalanes Union High School District's existing parcel tax.  Measure G does not increase what you pay now, it stays the same.  The parcel tax raises stable, reliable funds our local high schools - Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte.  Deep cuts in state funding have forced the Acalanes Union High School District to cut its budget by more than $6 million - a cut of over $1,000 per student.

Without parcel tax funds:

Class sizes will continue to increase.
More teaching positions will be eliminated.
Many of the AP, honors and college prep classes our students need to successfully compete for college and university admission will disappear.
        Library hours will be cut.

The total impact of losing Measure G funds would be the equivalent of closing one of the district's four high schools. Every vote - especially yours - is critical. Measure G must win with a two-thirds majority.

Learn more - and endorse Measure G - at www.AboutMeasureG.com.

Fall Phonathon
LASF will launch its Fall Phonathon on Sunday evening Oct 18.  Our goal is to contact new school families and those we weren't able to reach in the Spring.  Even in a good year, California state funding alone cannot provide our public schools with the full range of educational programs essential for a complete, well-rounded education.  In our district, private donations help make up the difference.

Together, your LASF and parent club donations pay for essential programs and services that would be lost due to state funding shortfalls.  Lafayette public schools rely heavily on this partnership.  In turn, we hope we can rely on you.  Please answer that phonathon call.

"Race to Nowhere" a film by Lafayette filmmaker Vicki Abeles, will have its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival, and hope you will share in the incredible honor that has been bestowed upon us by attending:
Saturday, October 10th
3:30 p.m.
Sequoia Theater - Mill Valley
The premier will mark the beginning of a national movement to transform education and reclaim healthy childhood.    Academic leaders from all over the country are clamoring for the film, and we are excited to present its premiere locally.
In the words of Ilya Tovbis of the festival:
"Director Vicki Abeles makes the personal political-and starts a crucial national conversation-in this groundbreaking expos of the pressure to succeed exerted on American schoolchildren.... What starts as a private matter widens into a cogent examination of systemic pressures faced by youth amid dropping test scores, a shrinking global economy and increasingly unrealistic expectations set by parents, universities, school districts and society at large. The demands have crushing, widespread consequences.... Through incisive, heartbreaking interviews with schoolchildren, teachers, parents and sociologists, Abeles points to the silent epidemic running rampant in our schools as well as a cure."

Tickets are on sale now.
The film also plays on Sunday, October 18th at 5:45 p.m. at the San Rafael Film Center.
Please visit the festival's website, http://2009.mvff.com, to purchase tickets, and visit our site at www.racetonowhere.com to view the trailer and learn more.
