Principal's Message
Dear Acalanes High School Community,
I would like to welcome all returning and new students and
families. The first day of school has arrived and we are excited to take on the
challenges of the new school year.
While we may have some obstacles ahead of us in light of the
current financial crisis, we promise to continue to offer high quality
programs, curriculum that prepares our students for the 21st century
and promote high level learning by all students.
I would like to thank all Acalanes High School staff members
and parent volunteers who have worked tirelessly to prepare the school,
register our students and make our incoming freshman feel comfortable. Your
hard work is truly appreciated.
I'd like to remind all students that we will be holding our
first rally and a school dance on Friday, August 28th. I hope to see
all of our students attend these events.
Thank you again and Go Dons!

Counseling Notes
Welcome back to school!
Program Change Requests
Due to budgets cuts our classes are quite full and program changes will be limited. Starting Friday, August 28th students who would like to drop, change, or add a class may fill out a Program Change Request Form and turn it in to the Counseling Office before school, at brunch, at lunch, or after school. Most classes are full and space is quite limited. If we are able to make a change for a student we will post their name on a list in the Counseling Office window. The list will be updated daily.

Healthy Choices/Challenge Success/Parent Ed
_____________________________________________________________________________________________ FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Greetings from Acalanes School Nurse Dvora Citron: Welcome to the new school year. My work schedule will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and every other Friday, with periodic alterations. You can access my exact schedule and a wealth of other information on health, wellness, and adolescent issues on my Blackboard website: http://tinyurl.com/5zena8. There you can also download forms for medication and medical issues. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Acalanes Parents Club and Healthy Choices committee for their continued support of our school health program. Thanks to the the support of the Acalanes Parents Club and Oakland Athletic Club, we can look forward to after-school Yoga and Pilates on Tuesdays and Thursdays. More info to come.
SWINE FLU INFORMATION Below is information on the swine flu from our local health department and our district for all students and families in our district: Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS), the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continue to monitor the H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) situation. We have been advised by CCHS that schools in Contra Costa County will not be closed unless there is a large number of students or faculty who are ill which interferes with the school's ability to function. CCHS will consider school and childcare closure on an individual basis, taking into consideration health information available at the time. We will keep you updated with any important information. H1N1 flu is present throughout Contra Costa County. As children return to school and spend less time outdoors and more time in confined spaces, such as classrooms, CCHS expects to see more illness caused by H1N1 flu. Please follow these prevention tips to prevent the spread of this illness: Ø Check your children for symptoms of influenza (primarily fever with either a cough or a sore throat). Ø Keep sick people at home. Don't send them to school, childcare or work. No one should return to school until they have had no fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine, even if they feel better. Ø Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, have them use an alcohol-based hand rub to clean their hands. Ø Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Ø Teach your children to stay at least six feet away from people who are sick. Ø Vaccinate your children and yourself with the seasonal flu vaccine. Currently an H1N1 flu vaccine is not available. CCHS will let us know when and where the vaccine will be available. However, regular, seasonal flu vaccine will be available in the fall. Although seasonal flu vaccine doesn't protect against H1N1 flu, it does protect from seasonal influenza viruses. To find out where to get seasonal flu vaccine for you and your family, contact your health care provider or health plan. You can also call the Public Health Flu Hotline at (925) 313-6469 or visit www.flucliniclocator.org.

Acalanes Sports
Summer vacation is coming to a close,
school is beginning, and Fall sports are off to a fast start. The boy's
water polo team spent countless hours in the weight room at 6:00 am to become
the hulking figures that will be a strong threat to win an NCS title. The
football program has been hard at work through the Spring and Summer and is
primed for success under new head coach, Mike Ivankovich. The girl's
volleyball team continues to improve quickly under second year coach Steve
Siegmann. This could be their year to do significant playoff
damage. The cross country team is always in the section and state
championship mix, and this year will be no different. The girl's
water polo team has steadily risen in the NCS pecking order, and show promises
of something special under the tutelage of head coach and math teacher extraordinaire,
Misha Bushel. The girl's golf team is excited to carry over the
strong performance from last year into greater success this year. They
return a strong group of young players that are eager and ready. The girl's
golf team, though young, will be competitive as usual by the end of the season with
the guidance of head coach, Tim Scott. The spirit squad opened to rave
reviews last year, and have worked hard over the Summer to eclipse all
expectations to provide performance that we will all appreciate. The
drumline is catching fire under founder and math teacher, Vicky Zalewski.
It will be an exciting Fall season. Don't miss a moment.

Lafayette Farmer's MarketThe City of Lafayette will have a trial farmers market at the downtown Plaza Park on the first three Thursday evenings of September (9/3, 9/10, 9/17) from 4-8pm. This market will be have a local focus with most of the farmers coming from less than 100 miles! The purpose of the trial is to see if there are any traffic or parking issues, and to gauge the impact on local businesses. So, please try to find an easy place to park and then walk to the market, (Mt. Diablo Rd., east of the new library has many parking spots) or ride your bike, and consider visiting other stores and restaurants while in town. Please spread the word and help make the farmers market a big success!! http://www.cccfm.org/pages/laf.html__________________________________________________________________________________________ Want help planting an edible garden at home? The Urban Farmers - Pilot in Lafayette: Many of us in Lafayette have yard space to grow veggies, but not the time or expertise. There is a new non-profit called The Urban Farmers ( www.theurbanfarmers.org) which aims to farm your backyard for you. You supply the land and water and they supply the labor and expertise. All you need is 300+ square feet of growing space. You receive all the food you can eat and the excess is distributed to neighbors and charities. They are hoping to pilot their model in Lafayette and would like to hear from anyone that might be interested. Their service would be free. Send an email to inquiries@theurbanfarmers.org or call (415) 806-7005.
