Music by Eric Salzman, Libretto adapted by Eric Salzman from a work by Ned Jackson, Amy Leland, Stage Director, Michael Fennelly, Music Director
The opera begins from the moment of disaster and unfolds in flashbacks. Jim King is an entrepreneur who has emerged from the desert to offer the people of Los Angeles a marvelous device: a headset that allows the wearers to envision their most longed-for objects of desire with exhilarating immediacy. He himself appears to all who encounter him only as an electronic image, on television. He hires a business manager, Stan; and, together with his manager and mother, he entices a group of investors to back him and even help manufacture his product. It catches consumer fancy and spreads like wildfire. Flushed with success, the investors leave their money with Jim; and he marries one of his salesmen, a trusting but realistic young woman, who is willing to put up with the "long-distance relationship." But then a couple of problems arise. The legal authorities denounce Jim's device as defective and dangerous; and Jim is forced, through circumstances beyond his control, to electrocute his mother. The grieving Jim plans to revive his and his investors' cooling fortunes with a hot new club that will offer users of his headsets a place for collective conviviality: the Mom Mausoleum. Opening-night jitters, then conflagration. The investors bewail their blindness. Jim emerges in the flesh for the first time and, with the help of his wife, prepares to do penance. Stan has the last word. * The CCO Development Series is made possible by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
