AWFSFair 2013
AWFSFair 2013 to Feature An Exciting New Look!
New Floor Configuration Provides AWFS with Improved Attendee Traffic Flow and Room for Growth
After three of the most challenging years that the woodworking industry has ever witnessed, 2011 showed promise in terms of the industry finally finding its footing and so far, 2012 appears as though it will be a continuation and our industry as a whole will continue to rebound.
Although the summer of 2013 seems a long way off, the AWFS staff is already several months into the planning for the 2013 AWFSFair. Over the course of the next year and a half AWFSFair participants will learn about some of the new show features that will make the next event unique and help the industry build on the momentum and increasing optimism that is being generated in the marketplace. However, there will be one new feature that attendees and exhibitors alike are sure to get excited about.

President's Message
To Work Together. . .
by Joan Kemp Two years ago I wrote an article on "consolidation" within our industry associations and specifically related it to having three joint committees between the WMMA, WMIA, and AWFS. These committees were to be a Joint Education Committee in which AWFS took the lead, a joint Technology Committee with WMIA taking the lead, and a Joint Public Policy committee with WMMA in the lead position. The purpose of this consolidation of committee work was to eliminate duplicity, to gain strength and effectiveness by increasing numbers, and to decrease costs for each association. It seemed like the most logical step to take in serving the good of the entire industry. I am sad to report, this exercise started off very well but appears to have fallen by the way side. What happened? Two years ago there was a real synergy between the three associations. Everyone was out to benefit the long range welfare of the entire woodworking industry-not just one association. There was a willingness to work together: to help each other, thereby helping the whole industry. We at AWFS still work toward our mission statement to "promote a growing and financially sound woodworking and furnishings industry". To us this means to look toward the future and find ways to improve the status not only of our members but of the entire woodworking industry. If the industry is healthy, AWFS will be healthy and it is up to us to help that goal to be attained. READ MORE>

It's A Very Active Spring for AWFS Members
by Angelo Gangone
March, April and May present three distinctly unique opportunities for AWFS members to network with the AWFS staff and other members of the woodworking community.
AWFS will have its first ever Open House combined with an Annual Meeting at our office in Commerce, California. The event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and all AWFS members are welcome. The dress and atmosphere are casual and it's a great opportunity for members to get to know the staff and hear about what the Association is doing to make a difference in the woodworking industry. If you are interested please contact Kim Roehricht (323) 215-0315 or [email protected].

AWFS Members, Exhibitors and Local Industry Contribute Over $5,000 in Tools and Materials to SkillsUSA Contests
Students compete in woodworking skills
Forty six students from Los Angeles-area high schools competed in the 2012 SkillsUSA California Region Carpentry, Cabinetmaking and Introductory Woodworking contests, held Saturday, February 4 at Mt. San Antonio College near Pomona. The students are in woodworking or construction programs at their high schools and are seeking careers in the industry after graduation. During the four-hour contest, Carpentry students showcased their skills in wall framing layout, stair stringer layout and cut, and power tool usage while cabinetmaking students built a cabinet door, top and face frame and Intro contestants built a magazine holder.
Of the nearly 50 contestants, seventeen achieved top scores that will advance them to the State Conference, which takes place April 12-15 in San Diego.
