Day Break Fields was proud to host a clinic with Katie on July 31st, 2011. This was our first clinic with her and we were very impressed with her professionalism. Katie's clear approach to training issues made it possible for all riders to make postive changes in their riding in the short period of time allotted. She had a genuine interest in every horse/rider team and taught each lesson until all were successful, even if it meant running into her lunch hour! Katie's postive attitude and cheerful disposition made her an instant hit and we are pleased to say that her next clinic filled even before she had finished the first one. As a fellow professional rider and trainer, I enjoyed Katie's vast array of excercises to solve an issue and her willingness to change strategies if something wasn't clicking with a horse or rider. All the riders came out of Katie's clinic with huge smiles on their faces, feeling excited, confident, and better prepared for the level of competition they are currently competiting. Day Break Fields is thrilled to have her as a clinician on a monthly basis.

Greetings!

This summer is truly flying by. Due to the extreme heat, we've taken it easy in regards to showing, but when we did show, all the horses and riders did great! We competed at both Maryland Horse Trials I and II, and were blessed with tolerable weather.

Other than those two shows, we've all been preparing for a busy fall season. I've been taking a lot of lessons on my own horses with Stephen Bradley and Beth Barritt. It's been great to be able to really focus on my own riding and I can feel the results when riding Trip and Texas. The fall season is starting to look more and more exciting with Trip now being aimed for the Plantation CIC** and then Fair Hill International CCI**. Texas is really starting to come into her own and is impressing us more and more each day. She's tentatively scheduled to move up to Preliminary later this fall. To say we're all excited about these two horses and their futures is a bit of an understatement.

Our fall season starts this weekend at the Waredaca Horse Trials and then it's back to Poolesville for the Seneca Valley Pony Club Horse Trials. Stay tuned to see how it all goes. And if you're at either of these shows, be sure to stop by and say hello!

The middle of July found us at Carolyn MacIntosh's Loch Moy Farm for The Maryland Horse Trials I and II. The first weekend was a little quiet with just myself and student Mike Hillman competing. I had Bob Wherley's Jet at Training, and Mike Hillman has Ensign Crusher (aka Wesley) at Novice. Jet continued to show improvement at Training level and added only 0.8 time cross-country time penalties to his dressage score to finish 12th in a big Open Training division. Mike had a great go with Wesley and finished on his dressage score for 8th place.

The next weekend was a little busier with me riding Trip and Texas, Mike riding Wesley and Commander Scot (aka Scottie), and Demery riding Athena. Trip started the weekend off in a huge Intermediate division. He put in a great dressage test for him, for a respectable 40.8 and then tried his heart out the rest of the day. We had two unlucky rails in stadium, and a peek at the ditch, so while he finished out of the ribbons, it was a very successful weekend for him. The big fences weren't an issue, and when we were in the air over the ditch/brush for what seemed like an eternity, I thought to myself, "I think I have an Advanced horse now!"

While my boyfriend Andrei cooled Trip out, I had to hop on Texas for her second Training-level event. While she found the horses galloping on cross-country to be a bit distracting during her dressage test, she didn't add any penalties to it for the rest of the day to finish 7th. As I said before, this mare has really come into her own over the past month, and I'm so excited to see where the future takes her. Mike moved Wesley up to Training that day, and his first two phases were great! But unfortunately they parted ways on cross-country. Thankfully neither were hurt, so we'll just re-group and aim for the next one.

The final day, we had Mike on Scottie and Demery on Athena. Scottie is getting back into the swing of things after the spring season off, and is reminding us that he really loves his job. He scored a fabulous 36.5 in dressage, and finished on that to place 4th overall in an Open Novice division. Demery and Athena have been working hard on their dressage at home, and while it didn't transfer to the competition arena that day, there is brilliant work still to come. Athena is supremely athletic and makes short work of the Novice fences, so it's just a matter of time before all the pieces come together and this pair starts bringing home the ribbons!
