Winter 2012

 Greetings!

Carol yoga

An increasingly common response, often to an unpleasant circumstance, is this simple statement:  It is what it is.

"The phrase, racing through the language, shows no signs of tiring," wrote the late New York Times language guru, William Safire, in 2006. From Britney Spears caught driving with her baby on her lap to an Olympic hockey coach asked about his tired players' chances against a more rested team, this catchphrase has become a popular mantra:  "It is what it is."

In yoga, a mantra is a thought or intention, expressed as a sound, word or phrase, that is recited to promote spiritual growth.  The intention rooted in "it is what it is" is acceptance -- the seemingly simple, yet often quite difficult, practice of surrendering to the reality of a challenging situation.

When confronted with something unpleasant -- whether it's a minor parking ticket or a major health problem -- it's common for our minds to spin with resistance: "This is unfair, it must be a mistake, if I do X, Y, or Z, it will go away."  Yet all this effort we put into resistance actually increases our suffering.

Instead, we can practice acceptance, surrendering to the reality of what is.  But this is not the same as giving up. Acceptance is simply being willing to have the experience you are already having.

When we stop wishing that things were different from what they are, we avoid wasting energy on resistance and can focus instead on positive ways to deal with our situation. We can see more clearly and decide on a healthy course of action.

As Buddhist teachings state:  "Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional."  The difference lies in releasing resistance and accepting that it is what it is.

     In joy,
