Issue: #5

Fall 2011

Greetings!

Carol yoga

One of my favorite yoga practices is getting rid of things I don't need.

On the mat, this involves letting go of unnecessary tension and distracting thoughts. Off the mat, it's an opportunity to embrace the yogic principle of aparigraha or greedlessness -- one of five guidelines for moral conduct, called yamas, outlined in the Yoga Sutras.

Literally translated as "not grasping all around," this practice of non-hoarding has been particularly relevant as falling temperatures have prompted my autumn closet transition of pulling out sweaters and putting away shorts.  Keeping aparigraha in mind as I sort through my clothes is a humbling experience. Just how many pairs of black pants do I really need?

This yogic ideal of not taking more than is necessary also extends to behaviors. For example, piling huge amounts of food on your plate can be a form of greed, as can taking up two parking spaces or being too possessive of someone else's time.

Practicing aparigraha in our "all-you-can-eat" consumer culture is challenging.  Yet this yogic notion of voluntary simplicity can help free us from being "possessed" by our possessions.  As Yoga master T.K.V. Desikachar writes in his classic book, The Heart of Yoga, "The more we have, the more we need to take care of it. The time and energy spent on acquiring more things, protecting them, and worrying about them cannot be spent on the basic questions of life."

Eliminating clutter from our closets and our lives can help us focus on what really matters.   Adopting the habit of greedlessness, of being willing to let go--of possessions, expectations or even your special spot in a yoga class--offers the opportunity to recognize that true happiness does not depend on things.   And frequently, getting rid of excess "stuff" provides the added blessing of being able to give to others.

     In joy,

Carol yoga
