President's Letter

Wilson

Hidey Ho, Neighbor!

Wilson here.

Top of the Park has come and gone, Ann Arbor survived another Art Fair, only one more German Park outing left - must mean it's August! Which means only one more month left on your membership!

As I mentioned in last month's musings, the Board has had some lengthy discussions about what it means to be a member, and what your membership dues should cover.   As a result, we have made the tough decision to do away with the printed version of the newsletter. (E-GADS...WHAT?!?!) I know, I know, but it has just become too costly to run it for just the few that opted for it last fall.

So, here's a list of things that are changing this year regarding your membership:

  • Starting in September, only an e-newsletter will be created and sent. We're looking at a possible new format that will be easier to print (for those that like that hard copy) and for posting to our new website.
  • Dues will be $35 per person. (Save $5 if you renew by August 31st! See separate article.)
  • Membership in the club gives you "free" General Meetings, meaning show your membership card and no donation will be requested/required unless we have a live band.
  • Activities where sign-ups are required and monies collected ahead of time are "Members Only" events. (Don't forget, though, as a member, you can invite a guest to join you unless otherwise specified.)
  • We want to host a "Members Only" party (or two!). More to come on that topic.

Please know that the intention is not to exclude, but make it more enticing to join!

Y'alls President for 2012-2013 (yee haw...corn will be a roastin'!)

Valerie

KUDOS CORNER

  • Kathleen Smith
  • Kirk Haverkamp
  • Cindy Czubko
  • Cindy Lunan
  • Donna Chambers
  • Eileen Wilkinson
  • Janie Knieper

I want to personally thank all those creative, tireless folks that have served as Editor of the printed newsletter over the years. Some have come and gone (this list covers the last 25+ years), but without their time and talents, the club would not be what it is today. We all owe them our thanks and gratitude.

KUDOS TO YOU ALL!

Thanks to Kirk for organizing our July 29th golf outing at Hudson Mills and thanks to Sherry and Robert for hosting a great potluck for golfers and non-golfers alike.

GOLF

Coordinators:

DuWaine Hoy, duwainehoy@att.net

Kirk Haverkamp, kirkhaverkamp@gmail.com

Deb Spring drspring40@hotmail.com

We will be playing golf every other Sunday this summer at various golf courses around the area through September, weather permitting. These are casual, fun outings. Partners and regular attendance are not required.

We play Sunday afternoons and frequently gather afterwards for a potluck cookout at someone's home. BYOB and a dish to pass. Other times we will gather at the course clubhouse or a nearby tavern to socialize afterward. Non-golfers are welcome to attend the post-golf gatherings.

DuWaine, Kirk and Deb will rotate leading the events. Email the leader back by the Wednesday before the outing to sign up.

All skill levels are welcome but you must adhere to the Rules of Golf Etiquette and play Ready Golf and keep up the pace. Pick up your ball after you hit double par and proceed to the next tee. This applies to scrambles and individual golfers.

Players are responsible for their own green fees and cart rental. No shows are obligated to pay by course rules. Please arrive 30 minutes early to take care of your green fees and to form the foursomes. We play a lot of 18 hole events with the option to drop out after 9.

We are working out our 2012 Schedule. Here is what we have so far for dates and locations. Times to be determined. Read your eblasts and check the calendar for more information.

DID WE MENTION
THAT THE CORN ROAST WAS SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2012
1:00-7:00 P.M. AT COBBLESTONE FARM?

The Corn Roast is of course our biggest party of the year  and the first opportunity to sign up for Western ski trips But it also plays a key role in our membership efforts. So if you know someone who might enjoy what the AASC has to offer, or an inactive member who hasn't been around in awhile, give them a personal invitation to join us on the 21st. It's always a great time!

As always, the Ski Club will provide roasted corn and beverages; you bring something to grill for yourself and a dish to pass. We'll also have paper plates, cups and utensils.

Admission is $5. Persons under 21 must be accompanied

by a parent or guardian. Cobblestone Farm is at 2871 Packard Rd., Ann Arbor and is the site of our twice-monthly club meetings.

Here's a link to a map you can share with the friend you are bringing

For more information, contact our Corn Czar, Devy, at Devy.van.Leijenhorst@compuware.com.

...and did we mention our participating vendors?

Once again this year, we've got a great bunch of sponsoring vendors that specialize in outdoor recreation who have donated wonderful prizes to be given away to attendees during a drawing at the Corn Roast. Some of the vendors will also be on site to display their products and services.

To participate in the drawing for prizes, you must have renewed your membership or be a new member. The drawing for prizes will be held at 5pm. You do NOT need
to be present to win, but you must attend the Corn Roast at least long enough to fill out the drawing ticket with your name and contact information.
