Kettlebell Classes
Chris and I will be beginning our Kettlebell classes in August.

These introductory KB classes will give you a base to train with kettlebells.

If you are interested in any personal training with us, an introductory KB class will be required before your first session.

Beth, Crystal, and Megan all joined me on Saturday for a lesson so be sure to ask them how it was when you see them!

Please email me if you are interested.
Thanks!

Greetings!

What a gorgeous day!  I love this weather.  I am thinking about a
walk tonight to enjoy it!  I went to grandma's today to pick GRAPES!!!!  It is hard to believe that it is already grape time.  I think that the hot July we had ripened them a lot sooner than normal.  Don't worry, though, there are plenty more that are still green and will be ready at the normal time.  We also trimmed her shrubs, picked tomatoes, and raked some leaves.  It was a great day!  My grandma is 92 and she still was out there with the rake in one hand and the pruners in the other.  She is one amazing lady.  One day I hope to be just like her, but I plan on having someone to do my yard work for me, and I will have a kettle bell in one hand and my protein shake in the other!  :)  Those will be the days.

I got some interesting news this morning.  I talked to the president of the NANBF (the bodybuilding organization that I competed in in St. Louis and got my pro card in).  He told me that the overall winner of the show was disqualified.  Of course he cannot tell me the reason why, but that would make me the overall winner.  I assume that I know the reason that she was disqualified, we only had to take tests on one subject in order to compete.  But I cannot be sure, so I won't point any fingers at her.

It does get me thinking about the subject, though.  Personally, I am proud to say that I can compete in a natural (drug tested) organization.  I would never take anything to alter my body in unnatural ways.  One, I don't believe that it is healthy, and two, with a lot of hard work, both during the prep and in the off season, it is not necessary.  We are all blessed that we are even able to go to the gym and work out.  We are able to change our bodies with hard work.  We are amazing in so many ways, and most of us will never use our body to its full capacity.  Through our actions, we can make it grow, and we can make it shrink.  We can make it stronger or weaker, harder or softer.  All through our choices.

I firmly believe that with hard work and discipline anyone can achieve their best body.  It may not be exactly what the judges are looking for, but if you have done everything that you can to get there, then you have been successful.  We might tell ourselves that we are doing everything that we can and we just "can't ________ - you fill in the blank, whether it is lose weight or gain muscle, or whatever else we "want" to do but never really take action on it.  With action on that want, you can achieve it and be all natural.

I don't think anything bad about those who choose to use pharmaceuticals, it is everyone's choice what they are going to put into their bodies.  It is just really sad when they compete in natural organizations.  They compete and win and take that moment of glory, that overall trophy, away from the one who truly deserves it.

Now, I am left with weird feelings.  I never wanted to win by default.  But if she cheated, then I guess it is not default...she cheated.  So I guess I wish I would have just beat her in the first place and I would not have to worry about it now...I will go for it in the next show then there won't be a question!  :)

I don't care if anyone uses drugs or doesn't use drugs (well, that is not completely true, I care whether or not YOU use drugs!!!:).  Whether one does it to help overcome genetics or a lack of discipline or so that it is easier, that is all fine.  Just don't compete in a natural organization and try to cheat the system.  We put in the work and do the best that we can with what we have.  Compete in an organization that allows it, but don't try and cheat.

On another note...I am reading a REALLY great book on taking action towards your goals.  If you ever have the stuck feeling in any aspect of your life, this is the book for you!  We will probably have a new goal assignment because of this book.  It is that good.  The book is called Stop Saying You're Fine by Mel Robins.  She makes you work to solve your own problems, but it really makes you think.  I can now see how our brains make us believe that we are fine in our job that we hate because it provides for our family or carrying around that extra 20, 40, or 100 pounds because, "look at her, she is much fatter than I am, so I am fine."  Ever rationalize anything like that?  Well, get the book and read it!  I am impressed by it.  I have a lot of internal motivation and get things done that I really don't want to do, but I know I drag my feet on some things.  I know I can work harder and do a lot more.  This book is helping me dream bigger and believe that I can achieve those dreams.

I know I have said it before, but we only get this one very short life to LIVE.  You will never be as young as you are now, so get started!!

Have a wonderful evening.  Love, Emily

Cauliflower CousCous

I took this to a dinner party the other week and told everyone that it was couscous and no one said anything about it.  About half way through dinner I told them that they were actually eating cauliflower.  It is so good.  Try using just the cauli in any dish that calls for rice.  I don't think that you will be able to tell the difference or even miss the rice.  I know it sounds crazy, but it is really good.  I have had this recipe for a LONG time, but I did not think that it would be any good.  I am SO glad that I tried it.  I made pork fried rice that was great.  Try it, I promise that you will like it!

 Ingredients:

  • 1 head cauliflower
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • some coconut oil (I don't use very much probably less than a tablespoon)
  • chopped, toasted almonds (about a half cup of almonds)
  • chopped fresh herbs - I used parsley
  • salt and pepper
  • red chilli flakes or cayenne pepper if you want it spicy

Process:
  1. Cut the head of cauli into florets.  Place in the food processor (I used the Ninja).  Pulse about 8 times until the cauli is in small pieces that look like rice or smaller.  I chopped mine in about three batches.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet and cook the onions a few minutes until tender.  Season with s&p.
  3. Add the garlic and cook another minute.
  4. Add more coconut oil if necessary and add the cauli.  Saute in the skillet a few minutes until tender.  It does not take long - 3-4 minutes to cook the cauli to rice texture.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Throw in the almonds and the herbs and toss.  Serve as cous cous and no one will know the difference.
  6. Enjoy :)

Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it's always your choice.

The message for tonight...don't do drugs...very fitting for school starting again this week, don't you think?  It is like DARE boot camp style!  I am just kidding, but know that your potential is so much higher than you believe.  The human body is so much stronger than the mind believes, and it will do so much more if you let it.  Get past the mental road blocks that you have set for yourself and realize that you really can do anything that you want to.  If you don't know how, I will help you find the way.

Love, Emily
