Greetings!

It's winter!  It sure is beautiful the first time that it snows each year.  What a miracle it is.  Every single snow flake is different...have you had a chance to take a look at a snow flake recently?  It is truly amazing that such beautiful crystals fall from the sky.  I would not be sad if this first snowfall was also our last :), but if you really think about it, it is amazing and beautiful.  Our world is incredible!

Chris and I got out and scooped the drive way this morning before we went to the gym.  It was so peaceful and it was a great way to burn some calories and start my day off with a different kind of exercise.  Get outside today and scoop off your walk or drive way.  Play with your kids in the snow.  Be active and get your exercise in different ways this weekend.

If you are craving some hot chocolate when you come in, try making it with your protein powder.  The water cannot be too hot or else the protein will coagulate.  Make the water just hot enough that it doesn't burn your tongue when you drink it, then stir in a scoop of protein.  It will be a true treat on a cold day, and it won't leave you craving more sugar later.  You can also stir a scoop of protein into your coffee and make a healthy "mocha latte" at home.  Much better for you and less expensive than the one that you will buy at the coffee shop.

I read another tip to help us not over indulge this time of year the other day.  Use your non-dominant hand to hold your fork when you are eating.  I have been doing this the past few days and it really works.  I eat so much slower.  I also found that I tasted and enjoyed the food that I was eating much more.  I was also more satisfied when I finished eating.  I am sure it was because I gave my brain the time that it needed to get the message from my stomach that I had eaten.

Using chop sticks works just like this.  You have to take smaller bites and you have to work harder to eat.  Both of these tips also helps prevent Alzheimer's Disease.  Just like the reverse walking lunges in class made you smarter, so does using your other hand to eat or using chopsticks.  When you do new tasks your brain is stimulated and that makes more blood flow to the part of the brain that is working.  The more blood flow we get to all areas of our brains, the better and the less risk we will have as we get older to forget things.  Aren't I so great?  I not only give you a perkier behind and smaller jeans, but also I make you smarter!!  :)

We will have out first weigh in for the current "No Gain" competition on Monday and Tuesday.  How are you doing with your holiday eating?  I have been doing well.  My goal jeans still fit which is very encouraging.  As long as I don't keep my temptations in the house, I do great.  I even passed up fresh baked chocolate chip cookies yesterday and managed not to eat any of the dozen that were sitting in the kitchen.  I thought of how I would feel after eating them, and I decided that the guilt and the frustration was not worth it.  I want to stay in my jeans, and I want to see the right number on the scale when I weigh in on Monday.  I am right there with you for this competition.  I am not going to gain over the holidays either!

If you find that you are having trouble passing up the treats this time of year, don't keep them or bring them in your house.  Make your home a "healthy zone."  Tell you family and your friends that you are not having junk in your house over the holidays.  We all know that there are enough temptations outside the house with holiday parties, dinners out with friends, work functions and gifts, sugar coated almonds at the mall, and the list could go on and on...  Make sure you are safe from the temptations in your own house.  You cannot always control what your choices are when you are out, but at home, you get to decide.  Your body will thank you!

I have decided to do a special New Year's Day workout for us to kick off the new year right!  On January 1, 2011, we will be having our first Saturday workout of the NEW YEAR!!!  We will be meeting at 8 AM at Gymnastics, Etc.  We will reaffirm our goals so that we are starting the new year on a healthy note.  Make your goal to be getting into the best shape of your life in 2011.  You can do it.

Beef Stroganoff over Spaghetti Squash

4 cups cooked spaghetti squash (about one medium cooked squash)

1 1/2 lbs flank steak, cubed (you can use any kind of roast beef for this, in fact I made a single serving of this for myself last week and I used left over Italian Beef.  It was delicious!)

6-8 TB olive oil

1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms

1 medium sliced yellow onion

1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream

Nutmeg, black pepper and dried basil to taste

1/2 cup beef or chicken broth or white wine

Prepare squash by cutting in half. One medium squash will yield about 2-3 cups per half; a large squash will yield 7-8 cups. Preheat oven to 325F and place squash halves cut side down in glass baking dish or dishes filled with 1 inch water. Bake large squash for 1 hour; medium squash for 40-45 minutes. When baking finishes, remove squashes from baking water and turn cut side up on plate or platter. Allow to "rest" for ten minutes so that squash can finish evaporating and meat can crisp a little bit.

Cube flank steak and season with black pepper. Heat 4 TB olive oil in skillet until popping; add onions and mushrooms and saute' until onions clarify and mushrooms begin to sweat and "bevel." Remove vegetables from pan. Add remaining olive oil and flank steak. Saute' until steak is mostly cooked through, then season with nutmeg, basil and black pepper. Stir to coat, then return vegetables to pan. Add broth or white wine and cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes. A brown sauce will form.

Add sour cream, and stir to combine. Heat over medium heat for one minute, then remove from heat. Combine with spaghetti squash and serve.

Holiday Survival Guide

I know that most of you will be going to or hosting holiday parties over the next few weeks.  Here are a few things to think about before you go so that you don't go overboard and ruin your hard work!

1.  Do not go to a party hungry!!!  Eat a healthy meal or snack before you go.  Be sure to include protein and a veggie.  You do not need to eat a full meal and be stuffed, but be sure that you are not hungry when you walk into the party.  Eating a healthy meal before will ensure that you are focused on being healthy.  At the very least, drink a protein shake before.  Whey protein, when consumed before a meal, has been shown to reduce the number of calories consumed and lower the spike in blood sugar experienced when eating not so healthy foods.

2.  When you arrive, do not walk over to the food.  You should not be hungry, you just ate, so talk to your friends and mingle a bit, and then survey the buffet table.  Do not pick up anything on the first trip by, rather assess what looks the best, and decide what you really want to eat.  Also note the snacks that look healthy.

3.  When you fill your plate, eat mostly the healthy stuff and a small amount of the not-so-healthy stuff.  Only eat what tastes really good.  If something is not good, don't finish it.  There is no reason to waste the calories.

4.  Be sure to pay attention to what you are eating all night.  Don't get stuck mindlessly eating the party mix while you are talking.  That could easily add up to 400 calories per cup.

5.  Have fun and do not feel guilty about the small treats that you allowed yourself.  Be sure to taste and ENJOY those treats.  Keep you goals in the front of you mind, and decide whether or not eating another cookie is worth it.

You are doing a GREAT job working out and getting into shape.  Remember your goals and the fact that nothing tastes as good as being fit (and fitting into your skinny jeans) feels!  I am so proud of you; you can continue to reach your goals even over the holidays.  KEEP UP THE HARD WORK!!

Oh and you can also wear those skinny jeans to all of your holiday parties.  That way you will feel them on your body and remember the hard work that got you into them, you won't want to over indulge and ruin your progress.  :)

Holiday Schedule
It is hard to believe that it is time to start talking about the holidays, but they are coming up quickly.  I will have as many boot camp classes as possible over the holidays.

We will take Christmas Eve (Friday, December 24) off from classes.  The 5:15 class will meet as usual Monday - Thursday, and the 6 AM class will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday to get in three workouts.  We will be meeting on New Year's Eve for one last 2010 workout...and on Saturday, January 1 for a bonus New Year's Day workout!!!  :)  What better way to start off the new year?!?!!?

Thank you!  Have a fantastic weekend.
