Greetings!
Thank you so much for all of your hard work this week! I have been reading a lot about eating this week. I started a new book yesterday called Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. It is really interesting. I have not read much, but what I have read, I really like. It goes along the same line as what I talked about in our last nutrition class. Eating like a cave man. Eating the foods that our bodies evolved eating. The way of eating that gives us unlimited energy. Makes us feel great. Helps us lose fat, be healthy, fit, and live life to its fullest. Who wouldn't want that? We get out of our bodies what we put into them. Junk food and processed foods that are full of sugar equal lethargy. Fruits, veggies, meat, fat equals energy. If we are eating healthy foods for our bodies, there is no reason that we should have to count calories. Eat when you are hungry and don't eat when you aren't. Eat healthy, whole, unprocessed foods. (Remember: grains are processed, so they are not included in this list.) And be sure to eat your fat! Eat saturated fat. Eat unsaturated fat. Eat FAT!! Fats tastes good and it satisfies us. Fat helps us burn body fat. Your body will thank you. You will feel better. There is no scientific evidence that shows a low fat diet will help your body with anything (including fat loss)!!! Read the article below written by Chris Shugart, a popular men's fitness and nutrition expert. You will see that I am not the only one who 1)goes on rants, and 2) believes that you need to eliminate grains from your diet. Once you do, you will not be able to go back. I know, I did it! :) Have a great evening. Love, Emily |

Shugart's Hammer
This article is from a health and fitness writer online. I read his column frequently, and today's seemed to go right along with what we have been talking about nutrition wise. It really hit home when he talks about the ADA turning out "brainwashed dieticians." That was me a few years ago. I was working on my masters to become a registered dietician. I realized that I was going to have to tell my patients/clients what the ADA told me to say, not what I really believed. Not what I knew worked, what I knew was the most healthy way to eat. I was going to have to give advice that would ultimately hurt this person more than it would help them. That is why I quit taking classes and stopped pursuing my master's degree.
I am so happy that I did because I know I am SO much happier working in a sweaty gym than I EVER would have been working in a hospital! I am so thankful that I went with my gut and decided that my path was not becoming an RD! Please read below. More articles by Chris Shugart can be found at www.velocitylife.com. I am not the only proponent of giving up grains. :)
Chris is a men's writer, so some of his articles are harsh and very to the point. Just to warn you...
This Means War Hi, my name is Chris Shugart and I'm an insurgent.
More specifically, I'm a food insurgent.
You see, I've had enough. I'm no longer going to listen to the major nutrition and health associations. In fact, they've become the enemy. As a diet and fitness professional myself, I just can't sit around and let these groups lie to people.
At first I thought these organizations, like the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Dietetic Association (ADA), were just out of date or misinformed. I thought they were just stuck in the last century, woefully behind the times when it came to their eating guidelines. I thought, "Well, we all want to help people lose fat and get healthy; we just have different opinions about how to go about it."
Nope. Turns out that the AHA and ADA are just corrupt.
Let's take a look at the "nonprofit" American Heart Association. The AHA gets a whole lot of its funding from the processed food industry. It basically works like this: If you're, say, a breakfast cereal maker and you want to trick people into thinking that your product is healthy, you can apply to the AHA and see if they'll let you put their "heart check" seal of approval on it.
Have you been suckered? Check! As expected, this involves the writing of a fat check to the AHA.
Sure enough, if the product is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and your check cashes, you get to put their stamp of approval on your cereal. Last time I looked, this label had been placed on over 700 products, including Cookie Crisps and Coco Puffs, products made almost entirely of sugar and major contributors to the obesity and diabetes epidemics.
Of course, we know now that saturated fat isn't really bad for everyone. It's healthy and even necessary. And cholesterol? Well, we're figuring out that dietary sources of cholesterol don't seem to effect blood levels of cholesterol. In fact, eating a higher fat/cholesterol diet that contains things like whole eggs has been shown to lower "bad" cholesterol levels and raise "good" cholesterol levels.
So why the out-dated stance by the AHA? Because it pays, literally, to ignore reality and modern research. And cereal makers have very deep pockets.
The American Dietetic Association, responsible for churning out thousands of brainwashed dieticians who push low-fat, high-carb diets onto a population that's getting fatter and sicker, is no better. Same shenanigans, especially when it comes to Big Sugar and Big Cola. When Coke and Pepsi say "jump!" the ADA says, "Yes, sir! How high? And would like us to wear a frilly pink dress as we leap?"
Why? Because Big Cola is the ADA's sugar-daddy.
Pun intended.
Give them diabetes, then sell them a book to fix it. Brilliant. Evil, but brilliant.
You know, I started researching and writing about food because I wanted to lose fat and have "ript abs." I started avoiding certain foods and eating other foods to help me get lean, stay lean, build muscle, and feel good. I even developed the V-Diet to help kick-start that body transformation and break the addictions to modern non-foods... you know, like those foods endorsed by the AHA and ADA.
But it's gone beyond that. It has become sort of a rebellion, an insurgency against the lies and the corruption. I would never buy cereal these days, not just because it's unhealthy garbage, but because I can't buy it in good conscience. As a health and fitness expert, I just can't knowingly put money into the pockets of those who spread false information to people who are trying to lose weight and get healthy.
I'm trying to tell people the truth. The ADA and AHA are telling them lies. Maybe we're not at "war," but we're certainly playing for different teams.
Game on.

Almond Crackers
Ingredients: 2 cups fine almond meal 1 tsp baking soda 1 clove garlic, minced 3 tbsp Italian seasoning 1 cup finely grated Parmesan or Romano cheese 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp sea salt 4 tbsp water
In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and stir to form a moist, sticky dough. Add more water or oil if needed. Using wet hands, place the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using your fingers, flatten the dough out into a uniform thin layer free of cracks. Bake in a preheated 350 degree over for 15 minutes or until dough becomes dry and golden in appearance. Remove and cool on a wire baking rack. Once the dough is cooled (and this is important, because it becomes very brittle right out of the oven) use a pizza cutter to create "crackers." If not consuming immediately, be sure to store in an air-tight container.
Krissy tried these out for us today and said that they are delicious. Too salty, so be sure to cut down the amount of sea salt when you make them. Maybe this will help those of you who are addicted to the Ezekiel tortilla "chips." :) I bet these would be awesome with guac.

Saturday Workout/Labor Day Workout
We will be meeting Saturday, September 4 at 8 AM at the IWU track for another great Saturday workout. Nicole clocked the workout today (plus the 30 minutes after) at 660 calories burned! That is amazing. We are amazing. I am so impressed with how fast we have gotten and how awesome you are all doing. Each week, you show me how your hard work is paying off.
Jacinda ran the ENTIRE way today. That is the first time that she has not had to stop! I am so proud of you, Jacinda, and all of you who week after week get healthier and fitter! AMAZING! I am the luckiest person in the world to be working with such an impressive group of women!
We will not be meeting at our regularly scheduled time on Labor Day (which is next Monday already!). The last few holiday classes, were not very full at 5:15 or 6, so we are going to cancel the early classes at the gym and go for a run! We will, again, meet at 8 AM at the IWU track for another fun mega-calorie-burning workout. |

Rachel contacted me in the last week about forming a MyLeanBody Boot Camp team for the Jingle Bell Run Sunday, November 14th, 2010 (the race is at 1 PM). I am SO excited. I would love to have as many of you as possible on "Team Blaudow." This race is the day after my third show that I will be competing in, so hopefully we will be celebration mode after another WIN!! :)
Ladies, with the hard work you put in each day, I know that we will have personal best's that day.
Some of you have asked about the no regrets shirts. Krissy has updated them and is placing another order. The shirts will be between $20 and $25 depending on how many we order. Here is a picture of what the new shirts will look like. We will all wear "Team Blaudow" or MyLeanBody Boot Camp t-shirts in the race!
We will be placing the order the first week of September. Please contact either one of us for more information or if you have questions.
Thanks and have a great evening! Love, Emily |
