Greetings!
What do you need to make your home suit your lifestyle? What sorts of arrangements - casual, formal, symmetrical or delightfully off-kilter - look balanced to your eye?
This is the fun stuff of decorating dreams - combining artwork, vases, florals, candles, personal photos, lamps, architectural pieces and cherished found objects to suit your style.
Let the fun begin!

Accessorizing - A Balancing Act
Asymmetrical combination of floral, vases and decorative objects |
Balance is not mathematical. It is the artistic placement of two or more items that complement each other. They look well together - the yin and the yang. Balance and composition are elements of art. So if it's balanced to you, then it's balanced. Go ahead and mix with abandon. If you always go for safe, that's the result you'll always get: No wow - big yawn.
Do keep symmetry, proportion and practicality in mind. Find a balance that suits you. Some favor a whimsical, asymmetrical combination, while such abandon would unsettle the everything-has-to-be-symmetrical darlings. Choose the must-have items you love and don't be a slave to the trends. It's all about what makes you smile!
Layered patterns of stoneware & florals create interest & visually fill space |
Tried and True Basics
There are, however, some tried and true basics to arranging: tallest items go in the back, odd-number groupings create the greatest visual interest, a bit of black renders definition, and layered patterned pieces create energy and visually fill a space. One of my favorite tried and true tips is to add a touch of mustard yellow to every room. Your home will instantly take on a sunnier disposition. Odd-numbered grouping with tallest item in back | Truly our hearts sing (like these angels!) when we are surrounded by the things we cherish. The shell is just the shell no matter how shabby or grand. It's our personal collections that make it our own.
One last hint: You can keep the clutter at bay by storing and rotating your accessories. You'll always have a treasure chest of decorative gems to shop from!
