Greetings!
Wow! It's been a long time since I've done a Newsletter! Sorry, sorry, sorry... been busy and alot has happened since the last one I did January of this year.
This one is kind of long, but just wanted to catch you up on what has been going on with me these last few months and what I've learned about myself and growing up!
Haha... Are you ready?
Well, it's True... Never say NEVER, because I thought I'd NEVER be on stage again... lol... Boy, was I wrong! I woke up January 30th of this year and felt like it was time to compete again. I thought... hmmmm, where did this come from? After 14 years of not competing... why all the sudden this urge?
I knew it wasn't coming from me, because why would I want to diet after eating what I wanted for 14 years. lol. Stunned by this desire... I kept asking God... "Are you sure this is what I'm supposed to do?"
The answers, in various ways, kept coming up, "YES!" So without really knowing what God's plan or reason for me doing this... I honored this desire and started my diet and training the next day.
I took my "before" pics January 30, 2010. I was 101.4 lbs. with 23.6% Body fat! An all time high for me! It had never been that high in my entire life! I was shocked! Even though my weight hadn't really changed that much over the years, my lean mass had decreased and my body fat had increased! That's a sure sign that you're getting FATTER... haha... and that was me and I hadn't even realized it! It just kind of crept up on me. BLAH!!!!

So when I sent out my last newsletter in January... the above photos are what I looked like! And these photos don't show all the cellulite on my legs and butt, or do they show how soft I was. haha. But when the photos are full size, you can see it and when I saw these photos for the first time... I couldn't believe what I saw.
How could I have let myself go that far! I didn't realize I looked like that! BUT.... that's what happens when you put yourself last... and that's exactly what I had done. I had put myself on the back burner and had gotten LAZY. I was not watching my diet and had stopped working out from 2005 until 2009 because I had gotten into riding and showing my horse, Wimpy, and also just got into the habit of not working out... it gave me more time in my day to do other things. Click here to see a video of me Clipping Wimpy for show season.

I thought this would be ok too, because I had wanted to shrink down from what I used to look like from competing all those years in bodybuilding. Click here to see my 1994 beach video.

I thought that it'd be ok for me to slack some. And at first it was. I did lose some muscle size, which is what I wanted, but the only bad thing is that my slacking turned into a convenient habit of not doing anything. And over time... THAT leads to decreased lean mass and higher body fat. And the more lean mass you lose, the easier it is to gain body fat. I was heading in the wrong direction and didn't know it yet.
I did try to get back into working out in 2009. Was starting to feel a little guilty because I had not worked out since 2005. So I did do some working out in 2009 from January-March and then quit until July. Then I worked out from July to September and created my "No More Excuses- 3 Minute Series"on my YouTube Channel... and stopped again. I felt like I was wondering aimlessly and didn't have any goals. What was wrong with me? I couldn't stick to it. I didn't have a clear picture of what I wanted. All I knew was that I didn't want to be big like I was when I competed in bodybuilding. That wasn't me anymore. So, Who was I now, and what did I want to look like and how did I want to train to fit who I was TODAY? I had identified myself as, "Clifta the bodybuilder" and now that I didn't compete anymore... I didn't know who I was.
At first I didn't get what was going with me, but remembered right before my 40th birthday of 2007... my thinking started to change and I started to feel different. I was soooo sad on the day of my 40th birthday and didn't know why. Didn't really have a reason to be sad... I just was.
Then from 2008 to 2009... My Dad had a heart attack and died a couple weeks later, The guy that talked me into doing my first bodybuilding show, John Organ, died of a massive heart attack, and one of my BEST friends from high school had died. Wow... what was happening? People I know are dying. How sad and scary is that? It really made me start to look at things closer. Life is short and you have to take care of yourself and your body and do the things that you want to do in life!
I think that's why I was trying to workout again in 2009, because I knew that I needed to be active again. I knew I had to start taking care of myself again, but I related working out to being big and muscular and didn't want that anymore. Finally the end of 2009 I had tried some bootcamp style workouts and was really liking how my body was looking. They were different from the traditional weight training that I had done from 1985-2005. But I stopped those too. Why? What was it that I wanted?
Then it occurred to me the end of 2009 going into 2010, that I had been in mid life crisis! Wow! I had been sad because I was turning 40 and that meant that I was no longer 20 or 30! I was 40! I was sad because I was stuck and didn't want to move on to my 40's and the second part of my life. I was afraid to move on and be who I was today. Who was I though? I had been stuck because I had started comparing myself and my body to what it used to be when I was in my 20's and my 30's. I seemed so happy back then. Why? Was it because of the way that I looked? That's what I was thinking at first. That's where I thought the depression was coming from, but it really wasn't that. So what was it?
I kept asking God for help and asking what was wrong with me. Why was I feeling sad and unsatisfied?
Then BOOOOM! I woke up January 30th and wanted to compete! The more I thought about it and all the pros and cons... it just made sense. There weren't really any cons. So I just TRUSTED what God had sent me and DECIDED to start this new Goal that was in front of me. See Video here.
I knew this decision to compete again would make me put
myself first again, which I really needed to do. It would help me to find ME again.
My body fat was
creeping up, higher and higher, and I was getting more and more out of
shape. I knew if I kept this up... I was going to be REALLY unhappy and maybe even become unhealthy, as heart attacks run in my family. Were my Dad and John dying, signs for me to get back on track with my health & fitness like I once was?
I had started feeling sorry for myself and sad that I was growing older. Almost like it wasn't worth working out because I had let myself go so far. Could I get it back? I was over 40 now... things change when you get older... so I started to hear... and even believe. I started buying into the things that I was hearing other people say that were in their 40's, 50's, & 60's...
"It's hard to get in shape as you get older. You can't gain lean mass when you're older. When you get older your waist gets thicker and fatter and you can't change it. Your metabolism slows down the older you get. ETC..."
I had bought a ticket to the downward spiral into negativity. My mind was foggy and unclear. I wan't happy, although I don't think anyone could tell. I think I hid it well, but I was unhappy. I was kind of stuck in the past. I didn't want to move on from the first part of my life. But I needed to because that wasn't ME anymore. It was keeping me stuck and unhappy because I wasn't in the PRESENT. WHO was I though? I did lots of reflecting during those 3 years.
Then when I woke up on January 30th of this year... and wanted to compete again... I felt like I had been Re-energized! It's almost like all the sudden I woke up from a sleep and realized that I had been in a state of depression and mid life crisis for those 3 years, and had come out of it and felt NEW and ALIVE! I think it happened because I had lost my Identity and didn't know who I was, not because I wasn't a bodybuilder anymore, but because I had put myself last and everyone else first. Doing that made me lose touch of ME. I never did anything for me and didn't know who I was. I wasn't taking care of ME and never set aside any ME TIME.
And just because I was older, didn't mean that I couldn't be the BEST that I could be! It didn't mean that I couldn't look good or be sexy or be fit or be in shape again. It meant that I have more WISDOM and more EXPERIENCE now and that I COULD be ALL those things and MORE!!!
All things are possible with God... and Age is just a number! SOOOO... Here I am today at 42 years old and gonna be 43 in a couple months... and at it again. Probably in the BEST shape of my life and feel better than I did in my 20's and 30's. I now see that I wasn't depressed because I didn't look good... I was depressed because I had stopped taking care of myself and didn't have any goals set for "ME" in my life! We need goals in our life! They are what keep us moving forward! They give us something to strive for and look forward to. And we have to have "ME TIME" and put ourselves first and take care of US, so we have more energy to Help Others in our lives!
So in the process of trying to find WHO I was and drop the muscle mass and my old identity of "Clifta the Bodybuilder".... I dropped everything good that went along with that. It wasn't losing the identity of "Clifta the Bodybuilder" that was making me unhappy because that's not who I was anymore. What was making me unhappy was that I also lost all the things that I had learned along the way as a Bodybuilder. I learned to go after what you want and to NEVER Give Up! I learned Goal Setting skills. I learned to not let what others think stop you from doing what you want to do. I learned to listen to ME and know what was right for ME.
I Let Go and Let GOD! AMEN!!!
In June of this year I won the INBA Ms. Reno title in my First Figure show. See the video of me posing 2 days before the Ms. Reno.
And then in August I won the INBA Ms. Nevada Title in both the Physique and the Figure Divisions. I went from 23.6% body fat down to 8.2% body fat for this show. See the video of me posing the day before the Nevada.
My Lessons... Don't let your past keep you stuck. When you're stuck... you aren't moving or growing and become unhappy. You have to let go of things in the past that no longer suit you and embrace and hold on to the things that do. This is what keeps you growing and moving forward.
One of my favorite sayings is... "Nothing Changes... if Nothing Changes." As long as I was still wanting to be 20 or 30... I was stuck in the past and not allowing myself to change and be all that I could be for NOW. Once I saw that... I could then embrace Myself and my Age and be Happy that I now have WISDOM and EXPERIENCE that I didn't have before.
And as long as I was putting myself last and not taking care of ME and not having "ME TIME" set aside each day... I was never going to know MYSELF and what MY Dreams and Desires are!
Be TRUE and Take Care of YOU!!!! Put Yourself first in Your Life, so you can Truly Help Others be the Best They can Be Too! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Commit to Be Fit" Body Challenge
 Hi All... This is Clifta's PHat PHysiques 3rd Body Challenge! I'm going to be calling it "Commit to Be Fit" now. This one is 8 weeks and is turning out to be a big one! You will have to take your "before" photos in the next couple of days or so and send them to me at phatphysiques@yahoo.com.
(Trust me... no one will see your photos but me. They will be totally
safe in my hands.) They are due this week. You can enter at anytime,
but you want to try to get your photos in so you have more time to make
your changes! (See the 1st PHat PHysiques Body Challenge Winners Here) Also... I will be announcing the winners of the 2nd Body Challenge this weekend, so watch for results! Along with your photos please send your: Name, gender, height,
weight, age, and waist measurement. I will also need your goals for
those 8 weeks. What do you want to achieve? Ex: no fast foods, lose 10
pounds, workout 2 times per week without missing, do cardio 3 times per
week, make better food choices, etc.... What do you need to start? You'll need to get a newspaper and hold it for one of your front poses...
very important. This will just show that you're photos are recent
because the newspaper has the date on it. Then without the newspaper...
You'll need to take a front relaxed pose, a back relaxed pose, and a
side relaxed pose. If you wish to add any other poses you are more than
welcome. What do you need to wear? Take your photos in a bathing suit or posing suit/trunks. If you don't
have that... then shorts are ok and a sports bra. Make sure your shorts
aren't too long... I'd like to be able to see your legs. You have to show
your mid section too, so no tank tops. And whoever wins... I would like
to post the winner's pics on my youtube channel, blog, and sites, if
that's ok. If it's not... let me know. Does it cost anything to enter???? NO Do you have to live in Reno to do it? NO... Anyone can enter this no matter where you are! Please come by my facebook page often to see what others are doing.
I would like you to post your activities and your changes on my page
because there will be others there that will help support you on your
journey. Also check out the blog post below this that will give you some nutritional guidance to get you headed in the right direction. That's about all I can think of for now. This should be enough to
get you started and if I think of anything else I'll let you know... or
