Berkshire Alum, Zach Lutz added to Mets 40-Man Roster
Lutz was a member of the Berkshire Red Sox 18-U Showcase team in 2002 & 2003.
The New York Mets added four players to their 40-man roster a few weeks ago to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. Minor League infielders Zach Lutz, a Berkshire Alumni and Jordany Valdespin, and pitchers Armando Rodriguez and Josh Stinson are no longer eligible to be selected in next month's Draft.

way to Triple-A Buffalo, batting a combined .287 with 19 home runs over four levels of the Minors. Fellow third baseman David Wright continues to block Lutz's path to the big leagues, so his shot may ultimately have to come with another organization. The moves occurred to protect Lutz, Valdespin, Rodriguez and Stinson from the Rule 5 Draft. Any player who signed before the age of 19 and has played five professional seasons, or who signed after his 19th birthday with four professional seasons, is eligible to be selected in next month's Draft if not on the big league 40-man roster. The selecting team must pay a $50,000 fee and keep the draftee on its active roster for the entire season, with few exceptions. Because they don't figure to be major players in the free-agent market, the Mets don't necessarily need many open spots on their 40-man roster. In addition, New York figures to gain two more spots from John Maine and Sean Green, both of whom are candidates to be non-tendered next month. Lutz earned MVP honors for the the Berkshire Red Sox 18-U team in 2003 while helping lead the team to an impressive 34-3-2 record. The 2003 edition of the Berkshire Red Sox 18-U Showcase team came storming out of the gate to win their first 25 games of the season shattering the records for both winning streak and wins to start a season. The first blemish on their record came in the end of September when they tied the Carroll County Rangers 3-3. They then won another six games in a row before another tie with the Lehigh Valley Prospects gave them a record of 31-0-2 heading to Atlanta, Georgia to face one of the premier teams in the nation, the East Cobb Astros. The Sox lost their first game of the season 4-1 to East Cobb and ended up finishing 34-3-2, setting an 18-U team record for wins in a season. |
