The Rhino Pink Ribbon Classic:
Helping Stomp Out Breast Cancer
By Brennan Miller This past weekend, our baseball community recognized the emblematic pink ribbon, a symbol representing breast cancer awareness. The Rhino Pink Ribbon Classic tournament ran through Saturday and Sunday and featured six age divisions. The participating teams and the baseball fields hosting these games featured related attire to the cause, including pink hats, shirts, lanyards and wristbands.
Each sale benefited the Breast Cancer Support Services in Berks County; $3.00 from each hat and shirt sold contributed to this non-profit organization, while 100% of the proceeds from lanyards and wristbands were donated. We at Berkshire Baseball would like to personally thank all of the teams, coaches, staff members, fans and all other supporters who helped to make this a successful fundraiser.
The Bluerocks Prospective Blues:
The 18-Under Championship
By Brennan Miller
On Sunday at George Field, the 18-Under championship game was held, following the semi-final match between the Grand Slam Bluerocks and the Doylestown Tigers. A challenge to continue to the final game and face the Mid Atlantic Prospects proved to be an exciting face-off. With the Bluerocks leading 3-1, the Tigers made one last attempt to put some more runs on the board. Following a botched double play attempt, the Tigers had runners on first and third base, with zero outs. However, the Bluerocks defense held tight, completing an out, though allowing the first-base runner to advance to second. This was followed up by a strike out and then an infield out to end the game. The Bluerocks would go onto the championship game in only a matter of time. The Bluerocks began at bat, but were soon out on the field to defend against the Prospects. While the Prospects were more successful at making contact, first batter Zach Burke making it to second after an outfield error, this was made up for with a fly out, followed by a strike out and an infield fly out to end the inning, allowing no runs to score. The second inning continued to display the strength of the Prospects on the field. After pitcher Camden Hess walked the Bluerocks pitcher Joe Palange, this was corrected by a double play action by first baseman Nick Yarnall. Andrew Merz was then struck out and the Bluerocks were back on the field. In their second round at bat, the Prospects jumped ahead. Camden Hess was first walked, Michael Houseal advancing him to second after an infield out.
The Prospects had scoring opportunity when an infield error caused Hess to advance to third, leaving Mitch Stoltztis safe at first. Chris Wentzel got the RBI, though the Bluerocks completed the out at first base. The Prospects led 1-0 heading into the third inning. Several one, two, three innings left the scoreboard untouched, each team continuing to display fantastic field work. Although, this did not permit any further runs to score, leaving the Bluerocks one last chance in the top of the seventh. Though going out swinging and making contact, despite one initial strike out, the Bluerocks could not pierce the Prospect's defense. The final score set at 1-0, the Mid Atlantic Prospects took home the trophy.
