Berkshire Red Sox Independent Team Preview
By Christopher Holland
As the 2010 season approaches, coaches and players are prepping for another positive year, and Rob Lozenski, manager of the Berkshire Red Sox Independent Team gives his outlook on the upcoming season for his Sox.
Lozenski stated that the most difficult challenge has been overcome, that being finding players to fill the roster, although there is concern about having enough players at every game and tournament. In previous years, the Independent Team had issues with guys not being able to make games due to their busy schedules and it ended up having to forfeit or cancel games due to their inabilities to attend. "This year, I do not plan on canceling any games due to lack of players because I think we have a group of guys that are fully committed to this organization, and team," said Lozenski.
With a solid core of returning players, the Independent Team is confident in its success as each returnee will affect the outcome of the season with more than just their abilities to play baseball. Lozenski stated, "I think that the 'returning players' ability to show the new players what this organization represents will be the only thing that will affect the outcome of our season."
His ultimate goal this year had been laid out early to returning players. He explained to them that this year they will not embarrass the organization by forfeiting a game 30 minutes before it is about to begin because it doesn't have enough players. "That is the main goal I have this year other than to win at least one of the tournaments we are entered in," Lozenski confidently remarked.
"I don't want to talk negatively on how the team was handled last year but, one change I am implementing is that I am not giving the guys an option to decide if they want to come to the game or not. I am pretty much taking the stance that this is where we are meeting or playing, so be there. Last year it was way to open to whether players decided to show up or not and this greatly affected the number of guys at the games. I am looking for more of a commitment to the team this year so that we don't run into some of the same issues as last year," he said
The Red Sox Independent Team will kick off its season Sunday, May 2 at the Robesonia Playground in Robesonia, Pa. The first game will begin at 1:00 p.m. against the Red Sox 28-Over Team and the second game will being at approximately 3:30 p.m. against a combined squad of the Red Sox & Blue Sox Optimist Teams.
"This year, I am looking forward to having a great season. I am hoping that the team can come together and we can have a great time while winning games," said Lozenski.
