Valencia County 1: Pigs 0
|
Pigs in the Belen area need to run for the hills. The Matanza is back on! A concerted effort by the Valencia County Hispano Chamber of Commerce was successful in convincing Alfred Almanza, Food Safety and Inspection Administrator in Washington, D.C., to grant a waiver for the Annual Valencia County event. If waivers are now required, this puts a big question mark on future Matanza events in the State. How does USDA plan to address similar future events throughout New Mexico? By the way, if you would like to personally thank Alfred Almanza for bowing to public outrage, why not drop him a line:
So why would the government want to shut down this traditional Hispanic event? Matanzas have been a part of our State's cultural heritage for hundreds of years. The USDA would probably say it was because of food safety concerns. However, the sponsors of the event in Valencia County report that since 2000, over 75,000 people have enjoyed their annual event with no reported food safety concerns. If it is not a food safety issue, it sounds like an issue of federal control-the Progressivesʼ attempt to continually tighten their control over every aspect of our lives. The day before the USDA debacle, conservative Glenn Beck reported President Obama's regime has introduced over 40,000 new regulation and rule changes in the past three years. Each one of those changes further restricts our freedoms. Where in the Constitution is the federal government given control of pig cooking in New Mexico? The Constitution reserves to the States and to the people control of those areas not specifically given to the federal government. The Constitution makes no mention of pigs! Under State food inspectors, there have been neither food safety issues nor restrictions on the Valencia County Matanza event this past decade. Maybe the State should re-assert its control over these events and tell the federal government to butt out. The Albuquerque Tea Party congratulates the Valencia County Hispano Chamber of Commerce for its success in giving restored life to its annual event. Once they find a new site, we hope they will let us know so be advertise the event for them.
