A Word from the President - August 2010

Michele Klimesh84:6.6  Never, even in the Corps of the Finality, will the creature metmorphose so far as to obliterate the personality trends that humans call male and female; always will these two basic variations of humankind continue to intrigue, stimulate, encourage, and assist each other; always will they be mutually dependent on cooperation in the solution of perplexing universe problems and in the overcoming of manifold cosmic difficulties.

How blessed we are to have models of both the feminine and masculine aspects of deity. How fortunate we are to have information about the Mother Spirit as well as the Michael Son! We need good spiritual archetypes for both sexes, since we find ourselves on a planet where women have only begun to emerge as social and economic equals to men.

I am reminded of this lately as members of The Fellowship discuss dissemination projects, wondering whether we are spreading the book itself, or the teachings within the book. Some think we should concentrate on spreading the book to every corner of the earth, and leave the social infrastructure to future generations.  Some think we should spread the teachings without even mentioning the book. A man in my study group asked, "Are we book salesmen, or a community of religionists?"  He answered his own question, saying that increasingly it seems we are both.

The conversations remind me of our male-female differences. Half of the human race has a biologic imperative to spread seeds far and wide, while the other half is instinctively called to nurture and nourish. If the book is the seed, and the new reader is the viable life form created, then truly, we need to concern ourselves with both. New readers are created only through access to the revelation, but all readers rely on the community of religionists for ongoing encouragement, support, and camaraderie.

We need to do both -- to spread the revelation and to care for the people who become engaged in the teachings. A big task, but what else do we have to do with the time we've been given here?

To Progress!   Michelle Klimesh
We have a few early pictures submitted from this weekend's birthday celebrations for our Creator Son, Jesus.

Next issue we are looking forward to having many more pictures.  Send them to snickburns@aol.com with location and names if possibl

This Child of Heaven
By Vern Grimsley

The child of heaven, born of earth
Who slumbers at his mother's breast
Is God and man and by his birth
Shall all of humankind be blessed.

This child of heaven, silent here,
Shall one day with a mighty voice
Teach faith to vanquish mortal fear;
Let every human heart rejoice!

This child of heaven, frail and weak
Who slumbers in this midnight hour
Shall one day stand and stride and speak
In Godly, manly mighty power.

This child of heaven, born of earth
Who slumbers at this mother's breast
Is God and man and by his birth
Shall all of humankind be blessed.

Northern Light Society of Alaska Celebrating 25 Years!

Northern Light Society of Alaska is celebrating our 25th anniversary on August 29th here in Anchorage. We were officially chartered on the 1st of September 1985, being registered as the 17th society of The Urantia Brotherhood. Perhaps some of you reading this post were among the adventurous souls who journeyed up from the "lower 48" and went fishing with the Alaskans. We have many good memories of that special event and wish to rededicate our commitment of loving service to this amazing revelation. We'll have plenty of fresh Alaskan silver salmon in honor of our silver anniversary.

Our group began meeting in the beautiful log home of Patsy Hayes back in 1972.  We are gathering there again this August after 38 years of weekly study group meetings here in Anchorage. Most every week we host an average of twelve readers. Our group was revitalized by the larger Fellowship community after several of us attended the IC 08 conference at UCLA.  We seek to engage in new expressions of creative dissemination in this new decade, a period of time that we anticipate will bring a changing awareness to The Urantia Book and its teachings.

Please feel free to come on up and visit us. If not this summer, come join us in the near future. We have guest rooms available and would delight in your company. Mixing within our membership is healthy for all of us. Sharing is indeed Godlike. We don't need to have International Conferences (as much as we enjoy the larger gatherings) to facilitate productive exchange and mutual inspiration.

We're so blessed to be a part of this awesome community of readers.....world wide brotherhood and beyond.

Peace & Love

Compare sent to you each week

Tom Allen has been a student of the Urantia Book for more than 35 years. He has created an email service that he calls "Compare" to highlight the words of respected authors and statesman compared to teachings from The Urantia Book. He always includes a brief bio of the people whose quotes are used in the comparison. The "Compare" quotes are sent for free, two or three times weekly, as a service to subscribers.

Tom told us this about "Compare", "It's just a hobby of mine that I am blessed to be able to share.  It started when I wrote a paper comparing and paralleling the Big Book of AA and the Urantia Book. I just got carried away with the concept and started sending out 'comparisons' daily as I found them.  I have always enjoyed good quotes and have gleaned huge benefits from them, so I take it another step further by comparing them with similar Urantia Book quotes. Several people have encouraged me to write a book, but I'm too busy with family and work life to devote any time to such a tome.  Maybe someone else will do it.  They would certainly be welcome to do so.  My archive of comparisons goes all the way back to May of 2007 at www.okub.org/taxonomy_menu/2/36?page=87 ."

Here is Tom's "Compare" email from July 13, 2010:

Yesterday we obeyed kings and bent our necks before emperors. But today we kneel only to truth, follow only beauty, and obey only love.
--Khalil Gibran, mystic, poet, and artist (1883-1931)

P.1588 - §4 (141:2.1) The night before they left Pella, Jesus gave the apostles some further instruction with regard to the new kingdom. Said the Master: "You have been taught to look for the coming of the kingdom of God, and now I come announcing that this long-looked-for kingdom is near at hand, even that it is already here and in our midst. In every kingdom there must be a king seated upon his throne and decreeing the laws of the realm. And so have you developed a concept of the kingdom of heaven as a glorified rule of the Jewish people over all the peoples of the earth with Messiah sitting on David's throne and from this place of miraculous power promulgating the laws of all the world. But, my children, you see not with the eye of faith, and you hear not with the understanding of the spirit. I declare that the kingdom of heaven is the realization and acknowledgment of God's rule within the hearts of men. True, there is a King in this kingdom, and that King is my Father and your Father. We are indeed his loyal subjects, but far transcending that fact is the transforming truth that we are his sons. In my life this truth is to become manifest to all. Our Father also sits upon a throne, but not one made with hands. The throne of the Infinite is the eternal dwelling place of the Father in the heaven of heavens; he fills all things and proclaims his laws to universes upon universes. And the Father also rules within the hearts of his children on earth by the spirit which he has sent to live within the souls of mortal men.

Khalil Gibran (born Gubran Khalil Gubran also known as Kahlil Gibran), was a Lebanese American artist, poet, and writer. Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of the Ottoman Mount Lebanon mutasarrifate), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. He is chiefly known for his 1923 book The Prophet, a series of philosophical essays written in English prose. An early example of Inspirational fiction, the book sold well despite a cool critical reception, and became extremely popular in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is considered to be the third most widely read poet in history, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

Nobel Prize Ideas
By Paul Herrick

Nobel Prizes that were given post 1955 for what the Urantia Book had stated pre-1955.

The fact of the two hemispheres of the brain was discovered in 1962  and won a Nobel Prize in 1981.  This is the fourth Nobel Prize that I know of so far that was given for discoveries made since 1955 that were mentioned in The Urantia Book in 1955.  The other three are: space temperature is above absolute zero (discovered 1964, Nobel 1978), binary pulsars (discovered 1974, Nobel 1993), and neutrinos from supernova (discovered 1987, Nobel 2002).

From The Urantia Book
49.5.7 From the two-hemisphere type of the Urantian cerebral cortex you can, by analogy, grasp something of the one-brained type. The third brain of the three-brained orders is best conceived as an involvement of your lower or rudimentary form of brain, which is developed to the point where it functions chiefly in control of physical activities, leaving the two superior brains free for higher engagements: one for intellectual functions and the other for the spiritual-counter-parting activities of the Thought Adjuster.

From science.  First discovered in 1962:

  • math and science
  • can comprehend
  • knowing
  • acknowledges
  • order/pattern perception
  • knows object name
  • reality based

  • symbols and images
  • present and future
  • philosophy & religion
  • can "get it" (i.e. meaning)

Larry Bowman
Larry BowmanThe Urantia Book Fellowship welcomes the newest member of the General Council: Mr. Lawrence J. Bowman

Larry joined the Forum on June 30, 1954, after being interviewed by Dr. Sadler. He subsequently became a member of the Urantia Brotherhood (currently The Urantia Book Fellowship) by joining First Society, then Orvonton Society,  then as a Member at Large and then as a founding member of Grand Canyon Society, where he is currently the Secretary. (He says, "seemingly for life.")

He hosted a study group from 1980-2004, began attending Brotherhood/Fellowship conferences in '81 and Summer Study Sessions in '90. He has served the Fellowship on an International Conference Planning Committee in 1996, the International Committee and the Membership Committee and has also served as a Triennial Delegate for Grand Canyon Society in '91, '97, '03, '06, '09.

Larry's desire is to make the Urantia Book as well-known universally as other religious works, attract younger readers, and sometime to see a film about the life of Jesus according to the UB, which he thought would happen before the end of the last century. He says he also expected the Urantia Book to be better known by now than it is. He also wants to promote the creation of study groups and societies and help with the publishing of Urantia Book translations.
