10th Anniversary

Ram's Head Inn

 re-opens for the
 31st Season

April 30, 2010

Dear Guests:

We are excited to be readying the Inn for our 31st season.  It has been a part of our family for so long and will continue to be so for some time.  This year we look forward to keeping the Inn open in the winter as we did in years prior and our staff is ready to see it dressed for all four seasons.

We are working on plans to introduce a pool to the site in 2011 as well as a poolside building that will house spa facilities to compliment the sauna in the main building.  James is also planning to extend the porch area and allow it to be enclosed and heated for the cooler seasons. It is our hope that these updates will better serve the needs of our returning guests and entice others to enjoy in all that Shelter Island has to offer.

Another great new update in the works is our new website. Our goal is to have a user-friendly web presence that will allow visitors to keep up with The Ram's Head. Everyone will be able to view and reserve seats for our public events and wine dinners, see wedding menus and pictures, view up-to-date versions of our ever changing menu, book reservations for the restaurant and inn and so much more.

Probably what we are most excited about this season is the return of Jazz Night. It has been a great Ram's Head Inn tradition and each Sunday our entire family heads up to enjoy all the wonderful music and views. It gives us such pride to know that so many others have also made it their Sunday tradition. Guests gather on the lawn, at the bar and while dining in the restaurant to listen the many talented performers who come out each Sunday. With all the changes and updates on the agenda, we hope that keeping traditions like this remind all of our guests that maintaining the personality of the inn is a priority. Check back with us for The Sunday Night Jazz calendar.

Please scroll through this newsletter to read more about what we have planned for the Ram's Head Inn.

Have a glass of wine on us this summer! Print the coupon at the bottom of this email.

We look forward to seeing you all this season!

Sincerely,
Linda and James Eklund

GardenLocavore
As some of you may remember from last season, Chef Chris Meenan activated a second garden for the Inn where he grew all of the heirloom tomatoes and strawberries served at the Inn.  The new garden complimented the herb and blueberry garden on the Inn's grounds.  This year the off-site garden has been enlarged to include his spring peas, varietal lettuce and carrots, just to name a few of the new items.  There is nothing better than the fresh taste of vegetables, fruit and herbs that come straight from the ground to the table.

Look for these items on his menu this season

10th AnniversaryDining & Beach Update
In keeping with the desires of the guests of the Inn, we have finally decided to offer a complete cooked breakfast that will be served to our guests from 8 - 10 AM daily.  The menu will offer omelettes from local fresh eggs, homemade pastries, housemade sausage, our own fresh yogurt, fresh fruit, housesmoked fish, etc.  Coffee with be available on a complimentary basis starting at 7AM in the lobby allowing guests to take a cup to their room or enjoy and early morning in the adairondack chairs, beach or patio.

Weekend lunch will see the grill down at the gazebo so we can service the beach goers as well.  A bar offering wine, beer and simple summer cocktails will be located at the gazebo as well.  Tables and chairs will be located around the gazebo and our servers will be on the beachfront assisting guests with their orders.  It should be a great venue to enjoy the summer breeze, great food & beverage with friends and family.

Our staff will also be available for assisting guests with the boats and general relaxation on the beach. Beach balls, pails & shovels and other items will be on hand to insure that all the group has fun.  Umbrellas will be available for those who wish to limit the sun exposure while indulging in the benefits of the salt air.  As always, the front desk will be well stocked with sunscreen in case you left your at home.

Asparagus SoupFeatured Recipe
Chef Christopher Meenan shares one of his favorite spring dishes.
Spring Asparagus Soup
ingredients
1/4 cup of butter
1 cup sliced shallots
2 pounds asparagus, trim, cut into 2-inch lengths
2 teaspoons ground coriander
2 14-ounce cans vegetable broth
1/4 cup crme frache
1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
 1/2 teaspoon lemon peel

preparation

Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, add shallots and saut until soft, about 5 minutes. Add asparagus and coriander; stir 1 minute. Add vegetable broth and simmer until asparagus is tender, about 5 minutes. Allow to cool slightly. Working in small batches, puree soup in a blender. Strain into your original pan. Press on solids to release any additional liquid. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm (or chill for a refreshing cold soup).

When ready to serve, stir crme frache, lemon juice, and lemon peel in a separate bowl. Top each portion of soup with dollop of lemon crme frache and enjoy!

This completely vegetarian dish will serve 6 as a starter, or 4 for a main course.

For the carnivors out there, reserve a few stalks of asparagus, wrap in proscciuto and roast for a tasty garnish
