Conservatorships. When are they appropriate?
An Overview of Conservatorships
2 women

If you know a senior who is not able to manage their affairs and/or is no longer making appropriate decisions the first thing to do is to identify if they have family or someone else trustworthy to support them. If they do not or their family/friends can not manage then it would be appropriate to call Life Services, Inc. We will work with you to identify what level of services best fits your senior's needs. LSI is aware that conservatorships are not always the solution and if it is not needed with a particular individual we will work with them to match them with the appropriate services.

Understanding what a conservatorship is, is the first step in determining when they are appropriate. Below is an overview of conservatorship that should help determine if someone you know may be a candidate.

Conservators are appointed and overseen by the court. Conservatorships are a legal protection for seniors who are unable to care for themselves or are victim of elder abuse. Each individual's conservatorship will be designed to meet their needs. Conservatorships can be of the Person; of the Estate or of both the Person and the Estate

As Conservator of the Person LSI does the following:

    • Arranges for the conservatee's care and protection;
    • Decides where the conservatee will live; and
    • Is in charge of:
      • health care,
      • food,
      • clothes, personal care,
      • housekeeping, transportation, and
      • recreation and spiritual needs
    • Make regular reports to the court and other interested persons

As Conservatorship of the Estate LSI does the following:

    • Manage the conservatee's finances;
    • Protect the conservatee's income and property;
    • Make a list of everything in the estate;
    • Make a plan to make sure the conservatee's needs are met;
    • Make sure the conservatee's bills are paid;
    • Invest the conservatee's money;
    • Make sure the conservatee gets all the benefits he or she is eligible for;
    • Make sure the conservatee's taxes are filed and paid on time;
    • Keep exact financial records; and
    • Make regular reports of the financial accounts to the court and other interested persons

Life Services, Inc. tailors and personalizes our services to honor the needs and request of each client. We do not believe that one size fits all. Our services range from occasional assistance to the total care afforded by conservatorship. Services are fee for service. However, if a client's assets are depleted Life Services, Inc. will provide continued care through our Benevolence fund. Please do not hesitate to contact us at 818.547.0585 or LSI@lifeservicesinc.org if you would like more information or know of an individual who might benefit from a conservatorship.

New Senior Monthly Manager Program Launches

Meet our Director of Community Outreach
Sylvia Hernandez

sylvia Meet LSI's Director of Community Outreach. Sylvia has been with LSI since 2007 and is an invaluable member of the team. She is the public face of the organization at many non-profit and business events in the community.

Sylvia is a graduate of Cal State Dominguez Hills and has over 20 years experience working with and for seniors. Her past roles have included working for AARP, the CA state assembly as a legislative aid and Senior Core. Sylvia was in large part raised by her grandmother and as such has always had an affinity for seniors. She enjoys working to preserve the dignity of our clients and enjoys getting to know each of them on a personal level.

Sylvia wears many hats at LSI. She creates linkages with other non-profits in the community to ensure that they know what LSI has to offer. Additionally, Sylvia works with the business community so that they are aware of the needs of seniors in our community.  Sylvia also meets with prospective clients and gets to know them and their needs to determine what level of service they may require. Sylvia works with existing clients as well; her work with them ranges from supervising their accounts to sharing a laugh. Sylvia is also developing and managing new programs in partnership with other staff. Basically, there is nothing she doesn't to do.

When Sylvia is not working at LSI she enjoys spending time with her family, going on walks, fine dining and traveling. If you would like to know more about Sylvia's work feel free to contact her at Sylvia_Hernandez@lifeservicesinc.org
