What do Hula Hoops, Hip Hop and Nun Shoes have in Common?

These are just a few of the elements that are part of the upcoming True Body Project for Teens that starts on September 26th.  This class combines the best of the Young Women's WWFC and the True Body Project to create an experience where young women in grades eight through twelve will have the opportunity to grow their authentic voices and relate to their bodies in healthy ways.

The 5 session class incorporates movement, writing, community and other artistic expressions to facilitate a happy and healthy regard of one's body as well as to unleash individual and collective creativity. These Sunday afternoons promise to be lively and lifegiving!

Writing Prompt
Begin

Begin again to the summoning birds
to the sight of light at the window,
begin to the roar of morning traffic
all along Pembroke Road.

Every beginning is a promise
born in light and dying in dark
determination and exaltation of springtime
flowering the way to work.
Begin to the pageant of queuing girls
the arrogant loneliness of swans in the canal
bridges linking the past and future
old friends passing though with us still.

Begin to the loneliness that cannot end
since it perhaps is what makes us begin,
begin to wonder at unknown faces
at crying birds in the sudden rain
at branches stark in the willing sunlight
at seagulls foraging for bread
at couples sharing a sunny secret
alone together while making good.

Though we live in a world that dreams of ending
that always seems about to give in
something that will not acknowledge conclusion
insists that we forever begin.

~ Brendan Kennelly ~

What is it time for you to begin?  What's the first step?

Try a fastwrite to these lines:
Every beginning is a promise/born in light and dying in dark

Do you believe we live in a world that dreams of ending?  Write about that.

"WWFC is a powerful opportunity for Shifting!"

logoSince January, that's been the mantra for the WWFC staff.  We've been recognizing that so much of what results in people's lives after being part of this community, is the positive shift that happens: an increase in confidence; expanded consciousness; wider network of support; choices to speak up and stand up in stronger ways.

If you've experienced any of this shifting in your life and know of others who are seeking or would benefit from that kind of change, please pass on this ezine information to them.  Better yet, personally invite them to come with you to participate in one of the many Fall offerings-a class, workshop, one of the Stages of a Woman's Life sessions.

We know money is tight and we also know the changes experienced here are priceless!

Our core classes for women begin the week of September 27th.  Classes are filling up quickly, so register today.  You can register online with a credit card, or download and print a registration form here.  Call 513-272-1171 with questions.

WWFC's WALLS DISPLAY WATERCOLORS & POETRY

On Sunday, September 12, from noon till 4 PM, WWFC was transformed into an art gallery and workshop for creating watercolor mandalas and group haikus.  Visitors to Women Writing for a Change on this sunny fall day enjoyed walls full of watercolors - created by the girls and teens in Young Women's Summer Camp 2010.

Katherine Meyer, WWFC art and writing facilitator, kept the creativity flowing with half-hour workshops where people of all ages sat down together and created group haiku poetry in one corner of the writing center, then displayed their finished products on the "hall of fame."  Others opted to dip their brushes and create unpredictable watercolor swirls and scenes, and then added words to accompany the art.

"I love being creative," said Holly Dehner, a young writer who tried her skills at a watercolor mandala. "It was so much fun, I created three works of art!"

Visitors from the neighborhood were encouraged to browse the writing center's gallery, sample the refreshments, and become more familiar with WWFC as an art center in their own backyard of Silverton / Deer Park.   Visitors came from all over the Tri-State, thanks to the Fine Art Fund's well-publicized  FindYourCenterNow website.

Mayors throughout the area, including John Smith of Silverton, officially proclaimed Sept. 12 Community Arts Center Day.  26 art centers offered FREE music, dance, theater, crafts and galleries.  WWFC also celebrated with the Shepard Fairey Mural and Play Me I'm Yours, where people made music at our outdoor piano.

Says Kathy Wade, Executive Director of WWFC, "We loved the multi-media celebration of art, music, and writing.  Some people think a writing center is all work.  We proved it can be all fun!"  Community Arts Centers Day, sponsored by the Fine Arts Fund, promises to be a popular annual event.

The First of More to Come!

Women Writing for a Change was part of Bellevue KY's "Art in the Park" first effort to include the art of the written word in their annual art festival.

We were well represented by WWFC writers and personal historians from Beyond the Trees, Jennifer Sauers (pictured here) and Kristi Woodworth. They planned and led opportunities for people to quickly capture some of their personal history by using the 6 Word Memoir as a prompt.

Although the weather wasn't the best, it didn't dampen the enthusiasm and ideas that flowed for being there for next year's 10 Annual e
vent.   Special thanks to Cindy Grammel of the Art in the Park committee for inviting WWFC to be part of her great idea to focus on writing as art.
