WRITING PROMPT

On Waking ~ John O'Donohue I give thanks for arriving Safely in a new dawn, For the gift of eyes To see the world, The gift of mind To feel at home In my life. The waves of possibility Breaking on the shore of dawn, The harvest of the past That awaits my hunger, And all the furtherings This new day will bring.
Here we are again... entering the harried holiday season. Thanksgiving is right around the corner but sometimes we are so busy traveling, preparing meals and tiptoeing around history that we don't make time to be grateful.
What to do?
Give yourself 30 minutes. Close your door. Lock your door. Put a do not disturb sign on your door. For goodness sake, turn off that cell phone.
The world can wait 30 minutes.
Read the above poem and consider the following prompts:
1. Write at the top of the page: I GIVE THANKS FOR: then write for 10 minutes, quickly, to stay ahead of your censor. Spend the next 20 minutes "mining" what you've written for gems. Do you have a bigger piece there? A letter? A dialogue? A newspaper ad?
2. Fastwrite to the topic: MY IDEAL THANKSGIVING.
3. Write for five minutes to MY BEST THANKSGIVING and five minutes to MY WORST THANKSGIVING. Pick out four lines from each fastwrite and write them down, alternating. Numbers these lines from one to eight, then organize them into a pantoum. With eight lines, you would have 4 stanzas. Using your numbered lines, arrange them into this order:
1 2 3 4 - Lines in first stanza. 2 5 4 6 - Lines in second stanza. 5 7 6 8 - Lines in third stanza. 7 3 8 1 - Lines in fourth stanza.
4. As always, follow your crazy muse.
