Teen Writers Return to Camp as Teachers

gabi_janela

Gabi Lang and Janela Harris (left to right in photo) may officially be called "Teen Assistants" for the Young Women's Summer Camp, but both will assure you that they are a vital part of a team! For two weeks over the summer, they will be facilitating Young Women's writing circles, creating teaching agendas, and building relationships with up to 30 girls and teens.

Both young women have graduated from the Young Women's Feminist Leadership Academy, sponsored by Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation. Gabi, who was certified in 2007, explains, "I wanted to learn how to create the same kind of welcoming space I experienced at YWWfaC - not just keep it to myself. This training taught me how to create space for other girls to find their voices."

Janela took the YWFLA training and graduated in 2008. "I wanted to know more about why this WWfaC process works so well. I wanted to make others feel the ease I felt." To receive certification in the training, YWFLA students attend training sessions, create writing circles in school and community settings, and assist in summer camps, sampler classes and workshops.

They both agree that one of the best things about being a teacher in the Young Women's programs is

Get Your Words on the Page this Summer!
Albert Camus said, "In the depths of winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer."  What is your invincible summer and how did you discover it?

Our summer classes for adult women begins next week and there's still time to register.   We are offering Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning classes this summer.  It's a great time for teachers and other people who can't make our fall and winter classes.  Also, we are currently accepting credit card payments for our summer program.

Come share your story, get your words on the page during this invincible summer.

Also, we are finalizing the Fall course schedule and will release those dates soon.

ANNOUNCING our own (writing) stimulus plan!!

During the summer, we normally offer a week-long retreat.  However, due to "certain fiscal realities" this summer, we are offering you chance to attend the summer retreat without breaking the bank.

You can attend our summer retreat at the beautiful Knobs Haven Retreat Center from Wednesday (7/17) - Saturday (7/20) for LESS THAN half the price: just $300.  That's only $100 per day and includes food, lodging and Mary Ann Jansen's fabulous facilitation skills.  Call 513-272-1171 for more details.

Summer Writing Camps:  Fun, friends and sharing!
GHD
During our first week of summer camp, we hosted 21 girls.  They built their own safe spaces, acted out stories, shared and even spent part of the day writing in the park.  Click here to read the entire story on our blog

There are still some spaces left in next week's Teens' Half Day Camp.  This will be our final camp for the summer.  Please click here to register.

Also, this Friday, another girls' class will host their read-around from 3 - 4 pm at the Writing Center.  Come hear the amazing work they accomplish in one week!

Blueberry - Diane Lockward

Deep-blue hue of the body, silvery bloom
on its skin. Undersized runt of a fruit,
like something that failed to thrive, dented top
a fontanel. Lopsided globe. A temperate zone.
Tiny paradox, tart and sweet, homely
but elegant afloat in sugar and cream, blueberries
baked in a pie, a cobbler, a muffin.

The power of blue. Number one antioxidant fruit,
bantam-weight champ in the fight against
urinary tract infections, best supporting actor
in a fruit salad. No peeling, coring or cutting.
Lay them out on a counter, strands of blue pearls.
Pop one at a time, like M&M's, into your mouth.
Be a glutton and stuff in a handful, your tongue,
lips, chin dyed blue, as if feasting on indigo.
Fruit of the state of New Jersey.
Favorite fruit of my mother.

Sundays she scooped them into pancake batter,
poured circles onto the hot greased griddle, sizzled
them gold and blue, doused with maple syrup.

This is what I want to remember: my mother
and me, our quilted robes, hair in curlers,
that kitchen, that table,
plates stacked with pancakes, blueberries sparkling
like gemstones, blue stars in a gold sky,
the universe in reverse,
the two of us eating blueberry pancakes.

WRITING PROMPT...

1.  Write on the top of the page... I want to remember.  Try a 10 minute fast write.  What does it want to be?  A poem?  A short story?  A journal reflection?  Something else entirely?

2.  As always, follow your muse!
