NEWSLETTERIssue 9 / September / 2012

Welcome back!

We realize some of you have already started school, and others are just beginning. We hope you had an enjoyable summer and are excited to begin a new year. The start of the school year always brings a combination of anticipation and excitement. The new year offers a fresh start; a chance for all educators, regardless of their role or years of experience, to consider how they can improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. This newsletter offers support in this process; by sharing video clips to show what Classroom Routines and Ten-Minute Math look like in classrooms K-5, and by offering our first ever online course, "Implementing Investigations." We've also included information about free activities that help educators and families do mathematics in creative and fun ways. We hope each of you has a successful and productive school year!

Implementing Investigations Online Course

Continuing our commitment to offer high quality professional development, Investigations Workshops has added an online course option for this fall. Implementing Investigations is a six-week course developed to meet the needs of teachers and schools who have been unable to attend our face-to-face sessions.

Designed for teachers who are new - or relatively new - to Investigations, this course provides in-depth instruction and proven strategies for successfully implementing the curriculum.

The first class begins on October 24th. Registration is open for individuals or groups of teachers. Class size is limited, so please register today.

For more information about Implementing Investigations or any of our offerings, please contact us.
Classroom Routines and Ten-Minute Math Activities
A critical part of the practice and review built into Investigations, Classroom Routines (K-3) and Ten-Minute Math Activities (3-5) are brief activities, designed to:
  • support and balance the in-depth work of each curriculum unit,
  • build over the course of the year,
  • provide practice with current concepts and skills,
  • review previously introduced content.
Requiring 10-15 minutes of additional daily work, these activities are intended for use outside of math time e.g. just before or after lunch or recess or at the beginning or end of the day.
