Greetings!
Greetings from the Investigations projects at TERC. For some time now we have wanted to find a way to keep in touch with the Investigations community. We hope that this newsletter will be an avenue for sharing ideas, discussion, and ongoing communication. This first newsletter focuses on the importance of meaningful practice and review. We chose this topic because it's often on people's minds at this time of the school year, when students are solidifying their understanding of concepts and skills that are critical components of the math that is still to come this year. We hope you find it useful.

Practice and Review
Students need a variety of experiences with an idea, concept, or skill in order to become fluent with it. To be effective, practice and review needs to be meaningful. It should provide repeated opportunities to become fluent with a skill while also deepening one's understanding of the mathematics. It should engage children and allow teachers to assess their students. Opportunities for such meaningful practice and review are embedded throughout Investigations.

Games
Games provide a powerful form of practice. This is because most students find them engaging and motivating. That means that they want to play, again and again, and they want to win, so they search for more efficient and effective methods.
