Lifting lights, raising funds in Canandaigua

President Barbara Risser lights a lantern at her home in Canandaigua to cap off a fundraising dinner she and her husband, Fred, hosted July 16. It was part of an event called "Taste the Night Away" to support the New York Wine and Culinary Center. After wine and appetizers under a tent at the culinary center on South Main Street, the group split up to have dinner at private homes around Canandaigua.

Once lit, lanterns were launched in the sky from each host home around the lake. FLCC is partnering with the wine and culinary center to develop a culinary arts degree, currently in the approval process.

Need directions? Ask Me
Student Affairs, with the help of the First Week Committee, will try a new approach to helping students find their way around the main campus when the semester opens on Aug. 30.

Though there will still be stairwell tables with maps and other information, they won't necessarily be staffed all week.

Instead, volunteers are asked to walk the halls wearing green shirts with just two words: Ask Me.

The idea is to have volunteers be highly visible and more accessible to students. Instead of lining up in stairwells, students can encounter an Ask Me volunteer in the cafeteria or the corridors closer to their classes.

"We hope this campaign will encourage more interaction among the Ask Me volunteers and the students, and help us keep that small college feel," said Kerry Levett, associate vice president for student affairs.

The library entrance will still have an information table, and students will be able to print out schedules at the library and Registrar's Office. They will be able to drop and add courses at the Registrar's Office or the Center for Advisement and Personal Development.

To serve as an Ask Me volunteer, contact Kerry (Ext. 1284 or levettkl@flcc.edu) or Laurie Card (Ext. 1211 or cardlh@flcc.edu).

Volunteers needed for popular Riesling Festival

Riesling PosterFLCC will sponsor the Arts and Crafts Market at the 2nd Annual Riesling Festival on Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Lakeshore Drive in Canandaigua.

The College will have two booths at the festival - one in the Arts and Crafts Market and one in the Farmer's Market. The College is seeking two volunteers to man each booth in shifts of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The shift times for both days are:

  • 10 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
  • 11:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  • 1:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
  • 3:15 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Volunteers get an FLCC T-shirt and the chance to interact with festivalgoers, something Tom Priester enjoyed when he volunteered last year. "I always embrace the opportunity to tell my FLCC story, and spending time with the passersby at the Riesling Festival allowed me to do just that," says Tom.

To volunteer, contact Carolyn Dunne, the Community Affairs summer intern, at dunnecc@flcc.edu or (585) 785-1904 and ask to be included on the schedule.

Volunteer training will be Wednesday, Aug. 11, from 11 a.m.-noon, in the board room on the first floor of the main campus.

If you have any questions, contact Debbie Kenney in Community Affairs at Ext. 1905 or kenneydm@flcc.edu.

High profile for FLCC intern in ARC College Experience
Robert J. Quinn Jr., a participant in the Ontario ARC College Experience at FLCC, is featured on Happiness House's autism services billboard on Route 332 facing the southbound lane between Route 96 and County Road 41 in Farmington.

The billboard shows Robert in his Scout uniform. On July 23, Robert became an Eagle Scout at a recognition ceremony held in his honor. Completion of the children's garden at Happiness House's Canandaigua facility was one of the requirements to become an Eagle Scout.

"He is an amazing young man, and we are very proud of him," said his mom, Judy Goodman.

The ARC College Experience allows people with developmental disabilities the opportunity to audit courses, complete internships and socialize on a college campus. Robert is currently serving as an intern in the Community Affairs Office.
Happiness House is an educational, health and human service organization that provides programs and services for children and adults with and without disabilities.

Do these SuperCampers look familiar?
Catie Whiffen, daughter of Sarah Whiffen, director of student life, and Taylor Fairman, daughter of Rachel Fairman, photo copy machine operator in Business Services, took part in the cheerleading SuperCamp at the College last week. The camp was one of several day and overnight sports camps and clinics held at the main campus over the summer.
