Florida Legislature

Protect KidCare for 40,000 Children in Florida

In the final weeks of the legislative session, an opportunity has presented itself to provide health insurance to 40,000 children who would otherwise be uninsured. That's a baseball stadium filled with children!

The Medicaid Reform package moving through the Senate includes language requiring public school systems to share their data for Florida's free and reduced lunch program with KidCare -- language that would provide health insurance to tens of thousands of Florida's children. More than 215,000 Children's Movement of Florida supporters will be asked to call and email their representatives and senators to demand that this particular KidCare language be in the final Medicaid Reform package.

The Children's Movement has created a page that will allow you to easily contact your elected representativesYou can access it by clicking here. They've provided talking points and draft text for an email, but it's meaningless without your voice. A couple calls. A few emails.Together we can make a difference.

Immigration Week of Action in Tallahassee

Make the call to stop anti-immigrant bills passing through the legislature

There is only ONE week left. The dangerous, anti-immigrant, Arizona-copycat bill, SB2040 sponsored by Sen. Flores, will likely go to the Senate floor today. The House will act quickly after that on HB7089; not wanting to discuss the true pricetag of hatred, a whopping $45,000,000,000.

Call Sen. Haridopolous:   English 866-584-0773  or  Spanish 866-584-3906

Say "don't waste taxpayer money on anti-immigrant bills"

Call Sen. Benacquisto: 850-487-5356

Say "don't jeopardize families and victims of violence by supporting anti-immigrant bills"

The session ends Friday; please make the call TODAY.

We Are Florida! reports that more than 1,000 Floridians mobilized to the State Capitol last week to oppose all Arizona-like bills. Students from Miami-Dade County traveled to Tallahassee to show how the bills would negatively impact U.S. born children living in Florida. The group was part of a week of action that kicked-off last Monday when over 500 children and their families hailing from central Florida marched around the old capitol building protesting the bills. We Are Florida! has mobilized 30+ buses in the last few weeks from all over Florida and they need your support to maintain their presence in Tallahassee. Listen here as Subhash Kateel, state coordinator for the We Are Florida! campaign via the Florida Immigrant Coalition  discusses recent actions related to the bills on 99 JAMZ Community Voices.

Say "NO" to Unemployment Insurance Cuts

The final days of the legislative session are upon us. Now that word has gotten out that senators will not support a six-week cut (thanks to your work of keeping the pressure on), the sponsor of the original unemployment bill that proposed this six-week cut, Rep. Doug Holder, is offering a "compromise" to senators to "only" cut three weeks, rather than the original six. We are demanding: No Cuts!

Several Florida State Senators have indicated that they will stand against the six-week. We need you to send them an email now, sending a message, loud and clear, to ensure that they refuse to accept any cuts at all, and support hard-working Floridians.

Miami Brain Trust Final Report

CEOs for Cities and Florida International University have released the final report from the Miami Brain Trust, a cross-sector group urban leaders who engaged in a robust discussion of the trends shaping the future of cities, how Miami is likely to fare in light of these trends and if the local civic agenda needs to shift in response to these trends. While many participants highlighted Miami's "diversity and harmony," Daniella Levine of Human Services Coalition pointed out that Miami needs "to get close and personal with diversity." The report, available here, details steps to develop a framework for success, driven by quality leadership, talent, place and opportunity, in order to facilitate cross-sector collaboration among Miami's leaders.
