Shop Local Campaign

Forest Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Announces Shop Local First! Campaign

 Shop Local Logo
The Forest Lake Area Chamber of Commerce (FLACC) recently launched its new Shop Local First! Campaign, aimed at fostering the continued success of area retail and service providers.

The chamber intends to raise awareness of the community advantages of patronizing local businesses, and will use advertising, promotions and a Shop Local logo to help deliver the message.

In indicating the need for such an effort, Colleen Eddy, FLACC President, points to numerous studies that indicate "the significant positive impact residents have on the local economy when they "shop local".  Many people just don't realize how they affect local businesses when they shop elsewhere."

Thriving local businesses donate to many community organizations, provide employment for locals and often use other local businesses to provide for their own purchasing needs. A recent study has shown that $68 out of every $100 spent at a locally owned business stays within the community.

Shop Local First! committee members will be contacting retail chamber members over the next few weeks to encourage their participation in the campaign, which is planned to include decals, print and web advertising, posters, contests and more. The only requirement to participate in the campaign is to be a chamber member.

"The chamber will also be implementing a Dine Local! campaign to raise awareness of area restaurants and to encourage residents to 'think local' for both their shopping and dining needs.

Social Media...is online content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies.

Social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content; it supports the human need for social interaction with technology, transforming broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content produces.

Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personnel, political, and business use.  Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM).   http:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/social_media

So why am I explaining social media to you?  Well the Chamber's November membership meeting will be focused on social media and what it can do for you as a business.  Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are not just for personal use they are for business use. Social media could be good or bad for your business - so you can't miss this opportunity to learn the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to social media.  The FLACC has groups on all of these sites - go to the chamber's website www.flacc.org and click on each social media outlet on the left hand side on our front page.  Once you check out each site -  JOIN our group(s).  This is a great way to post discussions and to keep abreast of what is happening at YOUR Chamber.

Thank you for being a member of the FLACC!  Please let others know about us and the exciting opportunities we offer!

MN Chamber Update

MnChamber College presidents' pay aligns with accountability
    By David C. Olson

Strengthening the relationship among Minnesota's higher education systems and the statewide business community has been at the forefront of my priorities since being elected chair of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees in 2007. Accountability is the common thread.

We've made noteworthy strides:

·     Employers and prospective students now have the ability to view the ratings and compare the performance of schools thanks to the Board of Trustees Accountability Dashboard.

·     Focus groups from underrepresented populations in higher ed were convened to identify initiatives to recruit and retain these students.

·     Projects and courses have been launched at selected schools to increase the rigor of and student participation in STEM curricula - science, technology, engineering, math.

Achieving these goals is a team effort, and our college presidents are integral to achieving success. Especially heartening is that our school presidents are becoming adept at creating opportunities in the midst of state government's financial crisis.

As they have performed, they should be rewarded. And they were, as recently announced. The executives earned between $3,000 and $12,000 for achieving certain goals for 2008.

College presidents were given specific and broad-based goals in order to receive the incentive. Initiatives ranged from improved graduation rate for underrepresented students and increasing the percentage of students taking STEM courses to expansion of custom training for regional industries and implementation of globalization initiatives.

No doubt, the incentives raised some eyebrows as we all face sacrifices during this challenging economy. In fact, the payments were mischaracterized as bonuses and were strictly "pay for performance." Presidents' base pay was not raised during the time they were eligible for incentives.

An editorial by The Mankato Free Press hit the mark: "MnSCU was right in setting up a system of accountability for its executives. It was right to pay for achieving those goals."

The Minnesota Chamber will continue to foster the connection between higher education and Minnesota businesses. That link is more important than ever as businesses face the challenges of a global marketplace.

Our workforce has always been among Minnesota's biggest competitive advantages. Once this economy turns around, we will need an adequate supply of skilled workers. The leadership of our state colleges and universities plays a critical role in making sure that happens.

Power of Positive Thinking Seminar

Lori Bestler from MindScapes Unlimited facilitated "Power of Positive Thinking" on October 7th at the Ziegler/CAT facility in Columbus.  The Power of Positive Thinking focused on changing the way you look at things, then the things you look at change...Attendees learned how to think well to excel and be their possible self.  If you missed this workshop, stay tuned, Lori will be presenting at the Chamber's February 2010 membership meeting.
There are lots of exciting things happening at the chamber.  If you have any questions, please contact us at 651-434-3200 or at chamber@flacc.org
