Writing Tip of the Month
writing tip keyboard
Do you ever find yourself inserting the same word over and over again in your writing? Lately, for me, that word has been the very short word, "so." I've probably used it somewhere in this newsletter! Sometimes those repeated words start to be a crutch and you just can't seem to get them out of your head. So...the thing to do is this--just write. Forget about the nagging word while your create. Make a list of those nagging words as you craft your story. Later, when you are revising, do a search for the pesky repeaters and make a decision to use another word at that point.

Greetings!

american flagHappy 4th of July! And welcome to my new electronic newsletter!

A while back, I decided to investigate professional newsletter venues that would more closely suit my needs. I wanted to have a uniform way to get news about my writing and books out to my readers, and do it in a way that was professional, slick, and less time consuming. For the past few years, as many of you know, I've used a variety of means to promote my work--from Myspace to Twitter, from Facebook to Yahoogroups. And rest assured, I'll still be seeing you on those networks! Collectively, all of those places reach a lot of people--but in a disconnected way, I feel. I wanted to have one place where I can shout the news, or provide you with an article or update, maybe even a new recipe, with a click of a button.

I'm hoping this newsletter format can be an answer. I'm sure it will evolve. I consider this first issue my "test issue." I welcome your feedback! Let me know how I'm doing and what you would like to see in the future. It's wide open!

All my best,
Maddie
Updates!
lf booksigningSome quick updates. Besides the recent releases you will see in this newsletter, you'll find I've been mighty busy!

In April, I attended the Dogwood Writers conference at Greenbo Lake State Park in Kentucky, put on by the KYOWA (Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia) chapter of Romance Writers of America. What a great time. The dogwoods were blooming and the weather was just perfect. This conference is held annually in late April and I always have it on my calendar. You should check it out!

For the past couple of years, I've attended the Lori Foster and Dianne Castell Reader & Author event in Cincinnati. I love meeting up with readers and authors there. This year I dragged along my sister, who won lots of books! That made her happy. Great fun, again, and I look forward to it next year. You can see a few pictures here!

I've also started a new discussion board so for those you who like to share info in that way, you might be interested in visiting.

As always, there are continually new things happening on my blog so be sure to visit often. Last week we were hunting for spirits in pictures...
The Legend of Blackbeard's Chalice
The Curse, the first book in my Legend of Blackbeard's Chalice series, continues to be a bestseller in print. This book is truly a book of my heart, conceived many years ago during a family vacation to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Who cannot visit those barrier islands and not wonder about pirates and their stories? The Blackbeard books, a time-travel series, will not disappoint, I hope anyway! I love Jack and Claire's story so much that in a future book, I will return to them as characters.

With the release of the third book in the series, The Quest, currently available in ebook only, I wanted to remind everyone of how the series got started.

Jack Porter is in hot pursuit of his kidnapped wife. Not an easy feat considering it is 1718 and the kidnapper is Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard. Determined to rescue her, Jack sneaks aboard the pirate's ship but is too late. His beloved Hannah dies in his arms.

Nearly 300 years in the future, Claire Winslow vacations on a secluded east coast island, where the image of a man walking the misty shores haunts her. He comes to her, kisses her, and disappears. The next night, they make love. But did they really? Or was it a dream. And why did he call her Hannah?

The Curse sends Jack and Claire on a wild search through time to possess a powerful historical artifact--the silver-plated chalice made from Blackbeard's skull. This chalice holds the key to their destiny and their love. Only with the chalice, can they reverse Blackbeard's Curse.

Or can they?

The Matchmaking Chef Series
mj bannerSuzie Matthews (Bed, Breakfast & You) loves to cook and she's the best darned cook in Legend, Tennessee. Everyone says so. She runs her own B&B, has published a cookbook, conducts cooking classes on Saturdays, and caters for special events and holidays.

You would think that would be enough, wouldn't you?

It seems, however, that she has also discovered another talent--matchmaking! Firm in her belief that good food is a way to a man's stomach, and his heart, she is convinced she can bring her friends (and maybe foes?) together for a perfect match.

After some success getting her sister back together with her old boyfriend, she sets out to test her matchmaking ability
on the one woman in Legend who no one thinks will ever get married, Mary Lou Picketts. Suzie figures if she can find the perfect match for Mary Lou, she's in business.

And so, the story Perfectly Matched, was born, hooking up Mary Lou with country music star Nash Rhodes. In Hot Crossed Buns, Katie Long gets tamed by local Legend cop, Chris Marks. Dates du Jour finds Lyssa Larkin, homecoming queen of 1992, wanting to get married just so she can get a divorce. In Side Dish, Becca North, who has sworn off men, finds herself swept off her feet by her best friend's date. And finally, in Mate to Order, the producer of Suzie's Food Channel show, Patricia Plum, puts in her order for a husband.

Each novella in the series stands on its own and is available first in ebook, then together in one print volume in early 2010.

You can read more about The Matchmaking Chef series and other Ladies of Legend books by visiting the Legend, Tennessee Web site.

Note: Side Dish will be release in August, 2009 and Mate to Order, in September 2009. All other titles are currently available at Resplendence Publishing or Fictionwise.
