THANK THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR SUPPORTING KEVIN JENNINGS DURING THIS RIGHT-WING SMEAR CAMPAIGN |
Greetings!
WE NEED YOU TO MAKE TWO PHONE CALLS! Please take action after reading the following message from GLSEN's Executive Director, Eliza Byard: "Today I write to ask for your help. You may have noticed that the attacks have intensified in the past few weeks as prominent anti-gay commentators have used their platforms to attack Kevin's life and commitment to making sure that all students are valued and respected. In addition, conservative Republicans in Congress have issued a letter to President Obama asking that Kevin be removed from his position in the Department of Education. The misleading rhetoric and baseless smears the opposition have used make it clear that Kevin is being targeted simply because he is gay and believes that schools should be a safe place for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. While these tactics are nothing new, we are saddened that some mainstream media outlets have chosen to give credibility to these debunked attacks rather than do the responsible thing and ignore them or call them what they are - lies. But there is good news. Despite the uproar among anti-gay opponents, we are heartened by the outcry of support for Kevin coming from so many of our education partners. You can read several of the statements here.
We especially want to commend President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan for standing behind Kevin in the face of opposition. We are asking our supporters to reach out to the White House and the U.S. Department of Education, to thank them for supporting Kevin through the smear campaign by issuing statements of support and refusing to give in to the bullying. White House: 202-456-1111 US Department of Education: 1-800-USA-LEARN (1-800-872-5327) Thank you for all you do to advance our mission." Eliza Byard, PhD Executive Director
