WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

about our new book & DVD:

DYPHQ-yellow background
Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt

From Hawaiian quilt designer and author, Elizabeth Root:

"You should be proud parents :-} your new book is obviously a labor of love. I just finished reading through the book - it's so nicely done. I think you've definitely been able to take the fear out of the first attempt to design one's first Hawaiian quilt. You've made it easy for the novice designer with all your tips and clear step-by-step instructions. I imagine that there will be many who try who realize it's not as hard as it looks and will readily find their own style.  Too, all of your wonderful quilt designs throughout are truly inspirational."

From two students in our Hawaiian design classes (featured in the DVD):

"I love the book and DVD format. A unique and functional way to present information. You two really are the best. I hope you are as thrilled and pleased with your final product. It is absolutely (bleep) fantastic!"

"I can't tell you enough how much I enjoy the book and DVD. I read through the book and sampled the DVD - it made me want to try another design!"

Quintessential Ireland
Quintessential Ireland
Is it the green rolling hills? A night at the pub? Or the haunting tones of the uileann pipes that make you think of Ireland? For Janice it is all of this and more, as she returns from 10 days on the Emerald Isle.

"I travelled with a friend and the wonderful ladies of McCall's Quilting, in a large tour group that ended in Galway at a quilt show. My first time on a tour and the trip was delightful. My most memorable event was a visit to the least-visited middle Aran Island, Inis Mein. A tiny island at the opening of Galway Bay; with a population of only 170; a strong-hold of traditional Irish culture; and not one tourist gift shop! While visiting with locals we saw how potatoes are planted by hand, how the rock walls are built (by hand), learned about lobster fishing, and played a bit of Caid.  Caid (in this version) is a team game played only on this one island, only by men, and only on St. Patrick's day (lest it be spoiled by playing too often).

"Nancy and my husband, Rudy, handled all my emails and sent out all the orders while I was gone.  They did a fantastic job, which let me really step away from the business for the first time, in a long, long time."

On each side of Janice's trip to Ireland, Nancy travelled to Canada teaching several classes to eager groups in Victoria, then in and around Vancouver.
Speaking of travel, make your plans now to see Nancy and shop in our booth at these three quilt shows on the beautiful Pacific coast:
  • August 3 & 4 in Newport, Oregon
  • August 18 & 19 in Crescent City, California
  • Sept 15 & 16 in Gold Beach, Oregon

E komo mai,
Welcome,

Nancy & Janice

DESIGN YOUR PERSONAL HAWAIIAN QUILT

The first design is in!

In our last newsletter we introduced our new book/DVD set:

Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt

Just a few weeks later we received this email from Carol Sicora: "Having a blast! Just wanted to let you know that I think you've created a mad woman.  Received the new [book and] video and am working on my second quilt design! The process has me totally captivated."

Me Ke Aloha O MauiImagine our delight when we received this photo from Carol shortly after, and the story of what inspired her personal design: "My husband and I loved the Maui Humpbacks so dearly and we visited most years.  There is a mother, calf and escort whale in the pattern. I lost my sweet husband (Harry) 5 years ago and when I go back to Maui, I float flowers in the water so there are wave curls and floating hibiscus and plumeria blooms in the waves. There is a tear drop cutout around one of the hibiscus flowers representing all the tears I've shed for him since his death. We both went through cancer treatments at the same time, I made it and he did not. We were married on Maui and his ashes are there now." Carol named her quilt Me Ke Aloha O Maui (With the Love of Maui).

What a beautiful design and a touching story. This is what makes Hawaiian quilts so special - the symbols and images that have so much personal meaning, beautifully displayed and lovingly stitched.

And, Carol has not stopped with one design.  "I also have completed another design that I have named Road to Hana. I have about eight to ten more designs I want to get on paper, so I guess I am hooked! Got the rest of my life."

Inspiration can come from anything, anywhere.
What will you design?

The book: 66 pages of full-color photos, illustrations and instruction.  A handy guide, at your side, as you explore and create.  Full-wrap, wire-O binding lays flat on your worktable, and displays the book title on the spine when the book is closed and on your bookshelf. PLUS,

The DVD:  2 hours of instruction and inspiration.  Watch as we show you our designing process; be inspired by the surroundings and experiences of our students in Hawai'i as they design their quilts; visit the Bailey House Museum on Maui, and the Grove Farm Homestead on Kaua'i, to view a portion of their priceless Hawaiian quilt pattern collections.

Have you ever thought about designing a Hawaiian quilt using the motifs of your choosing?  Then you will want this book & DVD.

If you can cut with scissors, you can do this.  No special drawing or design skills required.  It is that easy!

ANGEL'S TRUMPET - Hawaiian Quilt

Evening Fragrance

Angel's Trumpet - alt
Angel's Trumpet

We know everyone may not be inclined to design their own Hawaiian quilt. With that in mind, we are making our Angel's Trumpet pattern available for a limited time as our current Internet Special.

Angel's Trumpet blossoms can be from 6 inches to 20 inches long, and hang from a  large shrub, or small tree. Flowers range in color from  white to yellow, orange, salmon, pink, lavender or purple. Most often pollinated by butterflies, they exude a sweet perfume smell late in the day.

Angel's Trumpet

The minimum size for this quilt pattern is 84 inches square, but you can make it any size larger than that up to king-size. The width of the outside border increases with the size of the quilt.

Note:  With all Hawaiian quilts, you start with fabric that is slightly larger than you want your finished quilt to be.  The applique is cut from one piece of fabric, and is unfolded onto a single piece of fabric for the background. For a bed-sized quilt it is most common that panels of fabric are sewn together to create one piece large enough for the quilt. Instructions for how to do this are included with all our bed-size Hawaiian quilt patterns.

Angel's Trumpet: 84" x 84" up to 108" x 126". Normally, $15.00, for a limited time this pattern is available for just $12.00. Buy It Now.
