DESIGN YOUR PERSONAL HAWAIIAN QUILT
New! Hot off the press.
You have admired Hawaiian quilts for years. Now, with this book and DVD you can design your very own Hawaiian quilt!
We have been designing and making Hawaiian quilts for over 30 years. Two years ago we held two special classes in Hawaii to teach others how to design their own Hawaiian quilts. We used those classes as the groundwork for our book and video. After a two year gestation, it's finally ready. Now you can have your copy of this long-awaited book/DVD set. Join in the tradition of Hawaiian quilting and design your personal pattern. With our help, you can do it.
The book: 66 pages of full-color photos, illustrations and instruction. A handy guide, at your side, as you explore and create. Full-wrap, wire-O binding lays flat on your worktable, and displays the book title on the spine when the book is closed and on your bookshelf. PLUS,
The DVD: 2 hours of instruction and inspiration. Watch as we show you our designing process; be inspired by the surroundings and experiences of our students in Hawai'i as they design their quilts; visit the Bailey House Museum on Maui, and the Grove Farm Homestead on Kaua'i, to view a portion of their priceless Hawaiian quilt pattern collections.
Have you ever thought about designing a Hawaiian quilt using the motifs of your choosing? Then you will want this book & DVD.
If you can cut with scissors, you can do this. No special drawing or design skills required. It is that easy!
Order your copy today, for just $45. |
SUNSHINE 2FAQ | |
Here Comes the Sun

Our Sunshine quilt first makes us smile, then makes us think of all the artful suns we have seen through the years as we have faithfully watch Sunday Morning.
One of our favorite TV programs, CBS Sunday Morning, airs - you guessed it - on Sunday mornings. The routine at Janice's house is to set the TV auto-tune on Saturday night before going to bed, then to set the alarm so no one sleeps in.
We love this program. It is intelligent, varied, poignant, inspirational, humorous, and entertaining. Often it translates or explains current culture for those of us who are having trouble keeping up. If you can recognize Sean Connery, Paul Newman, Meryl Streep and Kathy Bates - but are clueless about SpongeBob SquarePants and have never heard of Black Keys, then this program is for you, too.
TIP: Make up this quilt using nylon fabric and hang it outside as a banner. Rain or shine it will make you smile!
Sunshine: 24" x 36". Normally $12.00, for a limited time, just $10.00. Buy It Now

KAUA'I - THE GARDEN ISLE
Good Things Take Time
| Bessie & Nancy |
We think the year was 1988. Nancy and her daughter had been taking hula lessons for about three years, and the whole family was actively involved with the hula halau, Na Lei O Manuakepa. We had both been designing and making Hawaiian quilts for a number of years by then, and were eager to share our love of Hawaiian quilting with members of the halau.
Three of the ladies from the halau asked us to help them design their Hawaiian quilts, so we scheduled a day at Nancy's for designing. That is when Bessie Snively (mother of kumu hula, Iwalani Christian) designed this striking quilt. That session was followed by a day to layout and baste Bessie's newly designed quilt at her house, in her favorite purple colors. Through the years Bessie would report on her progress.

gardenias, ginger and maile |
Fast forward to this month. Bessie, now in her 80's, proudly shares this photo of her recently completed Hawaiian quilt. The one she designed with our help some 25 years ago.
When we asked Bessie to tell us about her quilt, this is what she shared: "What inspired me was when I lived with my in-laws in 1946-47 (on Kaua'i in the Wailua Falls area). My sister-in-law and I used to clean house on Saturdays and then go out in the yard and gather whatever flowers in bloom and put in the house - in a great big ammo shell (probably a cannon shell). When the gardenias were in bloom Oh! the house smelled so delicious. Most of the blossoms were the different kinds of gingers, I loved the hanging ones. Maile was gathered around June up in the mountains.
"I have yet to give my quilt a name. It took me so long because I like to learn to quilt other things and go to classes. If someone is teaching, I want to learn."
Good things do take time.
If Bessie's story and her quilt inspire you to design your personal quilt, now you can with our new book. If this story inspires you to learn hula, you can do that too. Iwalani Christian still teaches hula in the Seattle area. Let us know and we will put you in touch with her, or check in your area for a hula teacher near you. "If someone is teaching, I want to learn." What a great motto.
Bessie, we love you. Mahalo for sharing your quilt with us all.

Hula halau = hula school
Kumu hula = hula teacher |
