COMMENT FROM A NEW SUBSCRIBER | |
We enjoyed this email and thought you might too:
"I got my hubby a portable DVD player for Christmas and during our holiday vacation time, we spent some time at the Library. I came across your DVD on Hawaiian Quilting. I loved it!! I'm part Hawaiian, and of course, love anything that represents my heritage. I've been stitching for so many years and have always wanted to further my knowledge with quilting, Hawaiian hand quilting. I've taken a few basic classes, but turns out it was hardly a beginners class. It was disappointing.
"My proficiency is really cross-stitching. But deep inside I have yearned to know how to quilt the way my makua (elders) have quilted. After viewing your DVD lessons start to finish I am so inspired to try quilting again. I have looked for other classes, but they all seem to focus on machine quilting. Just can't seem to get inspired about "stripping" versus "stitching" - It just seems too mechanical for me, and not something I can really get inspired to put my manao (heart, intention) into.
"So, this new coming year, I'm going to try it again and hopefully, like Nancy shared in the DVD, I can look forward to finishing a project of quilting! Mahalo nui loa for being a special part of perpetuating Hawaiiana. Have a wonderful New Year's celebration and will look forward to meeting you if you come to Oahu sometime."
--Happy Stitching

READER QUESTION | |
Q: What quilt hoop do you recommend for hand quilting? Do you sell them?
A: Quilt hoops, good topic. We do not carry them, but the ones we like best are made by Frank A Edmunds Company, and are available on their website. You probably want to get one at least 14" round. For bed-sized quilts we use the 16" x 27" oval. Size is really up to you--the size project you are working on, and what you are comfortable with.

Solid hardwood hoops with wood block closures and a long 4" tension bolt that holds your work tight and wrinkle free.

Greetings!
To launch you into a New Year, we present to you three NEW patterns! Quilters frequently ask us for patterns using hearts, snow men and Celtic knotwork. So, these are in response to our most-requested motifs. We hope one, two, or all three, will make it from your To Do list to your Ta Dah! list this year.
If your list for 2012 includes learning or improving your applique skills, or starting a long-awaited applique quilt, maybe a class will help you get closer to your goal. Nancy's 2012 teaching schedule is off to a good start this week, with classes in California and Arizona. Check her schedule on the Calendar page of our website to see when she will be in your area. Or, consider the options of a class at QuiltUniveristy.com, or one of our great videos. Remember to let your quilt guild program chairman and your quilt shop owner know about Nancy, and ask that they bring her in to teach in your area.
Our wish for you is that 2012 is a year of new beginnings and creative accomplishments!
Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! - Happy New Year!

NEW PATTERNS | |
For the New Year
What better way to start a new year, than with new patterns and a fresh project!
 | Snow Lady, 24" x 36" |
Bbbrrr... While it is still winter, before the snows melt, give our Snow Lady quilt a place to call home. Her subtle feminine shaping, arched eyebrows, and the jaunty flower on her hat, tell you "I'm a lady!"
Having taught Celtic Knotwork Applique for years, and having given those students a pattern in class, we thought it about time we introduce a Celtic knotwork pattern for all of you. You have been asking for it, so here is our first one, well, two (sort of). Galway is a true Celtic knotwork (e.g. made with bias tape) designed by Nancy for your table, or quilt. It is the fourth in our line of Applique Quilt Borders and Table Runners patterns. This pattern boasts very thorough instructions, complete with diagrams and photos; plus, pattern variations in 5 different lengths from a placemat to 70" long!
| Galway, 13" x 70" |
| Celtic Hearts, 24" x 36" |
With Celtic Hearts we pay homage to Celtic knotwork, but in a 2 Fabric Applique Quilt style. This one is made to look Celtic, but there is no bias tape involved. The design is marked on the applique fabric, basted as a whole cloth to the background, and then cut before appliqueing. Just like all our other 2 Fabric Applique Quilts!
It is not too early to be thinking of Valentine's Day, is it?
Each pattern is just $12.00

BREADFRUIT OF HAWAII | |
Abundance in 2012
For those of you who have been reading our Newsletters for awhile, you may remember that the Breadfruit (or Ulu) is a symbol of plenty, or abundance in the Hawaiian culture. The large, starchy fruit was a staple in the diet of voyaging Polynesians. Hawaiian quilters have often said that if your first Hawaiian quilt is of the Ulu, then you will be blessed with an abundance of creativity and quilts. So what better way to begin 2012, than with the prospects of making a quilt that will assure you an abundance...of whatever you want!
We think this is a great way to begin 2012, so we are offering you this pattern at the reduced price of just $12.00 (normally $15.00).
TIP: For a smaller quilt (approximately 72" square), use just the center medallion, without the border.
Breadfruit of Hawaii: 84" x 84" or larger. Normally $15.00, for a limited time, just $12.00 Buy It Now
