Greetings!
When you travel do you look for quirky, out-of-the-way places to visit? Or do you go to the famous vacation spots? Do you stick to the well-traveled main routes, or search out the blue highways (the thin blue lines on the local map)?
While Nancy travels often to teach, she seldom gets to play the part of a tourist. In this issue you will read about one of her rare tourist experiences.
Janice, however, finds that most of her travel is done vicariously through friends. How else would she have found out about The Settlement Centre Museum in Borgarnes, Iceland? Or known that you could eat horsemeat jerky served at a cichetti bar in Venice, Italy? Or discovered Haida Gwaii?
You probably have a unique, little-known tourist attraction near where you live. Have you ever visited it? It's true, we usually only visit the popular tourist sites in our home town when hosting out-of-town visitors. While it is still summer (or winter, if you live further south), why not take a few hours to search out a local attraction you have never seen before? Become a tourist-for-a-day in your town, see something new and be inspired.
Speaking of traveling, if you are near London (Ontario, Canada, that is) Aug 8-13, be sure to take in the London International Quilt Festival. Each year this "Festival focuses on bringing the culture and history of different countries/regions of the world to London. This is achieved by having, not only quilts and fibre art from the visiting country, but also the artists who create some of the quilts." And this year the focus is on Hawaiian Quilting! You will see many of our quilts in the show, and Nancy will be there to teach and to show more quilts in presentations. When she is not teaching or speaking, you will find her at the Cotton-by-Post booth, where you can shop for our patterns and videos. What could be better? See you there!
E komo mai!

2 Fabric Applique Quilt

"So tiny and colorful!" Nancy had the opportunity last November to visit a seahorse farm on the Big Island of Hawaii. She was teaching Hawaiian quilting to a group of touring quilters and one of their day-trips included a visit to Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm, in Kona.
While at the Seahorse Farm, Nancy was asked to use a net to collect food for feeding seahorses -- tiny, tiny baby brine shrimp. Then she had the opportunity to put her hands in the water, "where I was introduced to a seahorse that curled its tail around my index finger for about a minute! It was such a thrill to feel just a whisper of a touch against my finger."
Seahorses were once found in every ocean on the planet, but since 1980 there has been a 70% decline in populations. Many species are now extinct, or on the verge of extinction. The decline is attributed to harvesting for the medicine and pet markets, and to destruction of habitat. A wild-captured seahorse may only live for a few days or weeks in captivity. And, since they mate for life, if one of a mated pair is captured or killed the abandoned mate will die soon after. Ocean Rider has a mission "To eliminate the need to take wild seahorses of the reefs by providing home and public aquariums with healthy, eco-friendly, hand-raised, domesticated seahorse pairs to be kept as pets for many years to come."
But not many of us keep aquariums, and even fewer have live seahorses. So what to do when you love these little creatures? Obviously, you make our "Seahorse" quilt!
These little ones come in every color of the rainbow and range in size from one inch up to 13 inches in length. This variety of colors inspired Janice to put together some new Fabric Packs for use with this pattern. But, of course, you also know you can pick any Fabric Pack, or any colors that suit you and your color scheme.

Visit the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm website to watch their videos of these charming creatures, to learn more about seahorses and Ocean Rider's efforts to save them from extinction. |

Hawaiian Quilt

Don't let this quilt fool you. When looking at these blocks, keep in mind that the blue fabric is the applique on a white background. Look at the blue to see the appliqued flowers, leaves and fruit.
As with all Hawaiian quilts, you fold the applique fabric like you are going to cut a paper snowflake, cut on the pattern cutting lines to remove some fabric; unfold the applique onto the background, baste and stitch. This pattern is no different. It just so happens that with these designs, the fabric around the edge of the block is part of what you keep as the applique. This pattern is not reverse, it is not harder, or different. You simply do not cut through the applique fabric from the edge, you leave the edges in tact. That's it.
Plumeria, 1/8th
The picture at the right shows the blue applique fabric, folded in eighths, and cut for the Plumeria design. Nothing difficult, or tricky about it!
The six patterns from the top left are: Angel's Trumpet, Breadfruit, Plumeria, Monstera, Torch Ginger, Orchid. You can use these blocks, as pictured here, with or without sashing between the blocks.
Tropical III. Six 20" blocks. Pattern: Normally priced at $12.00, on sale for a limited time for just $10.00. Buy It Now
Tropical 9-Patch
HINT: Alternate Tropical III blocks with the blocks from our Tropical II pattern to create an alternating light / dark look that is stunning. No sashing required.

OMBRE FABRICS | | Color graded
Caribbean ombre
You have seen these fabrics on our website and in the stores, and probably wondered "What would I do with that?"
Seahorse on ombre
Well, we have some patterns that work beautifully with ombre fabrics!
Here are just a few ideas and examples. Let your imagination go wild!
Consider these fabrics as backgrounds for any of our 2 Fabric Applique Quilts, or use as the applique for a set of Hawaiian quilt blocks (like the Tropical III set). They also make stunning Quilt Borders & Table Runners, similar to this Crowing Glory.
Crowning Glory
Sunset ombre
TIP 1: From the same length of fabric use the color at one end as the applique on the color at the other end. Get twice the mileage out of one length of fabric. Yes, this works better with some ombres, not necessarily all of them.
TIP 2: Fussy-cut your applique shapes from a single length of ombre fabric to get the shading you need for your applique flowers and other motifs.
Garden ombre
See the different looks you can get with our Garden ombre, using it as the background, or the applique!
2 Mums, ombre applique
Two Mums on ombre
Of course, you can achieve similar effects with any of our 2 Fabric Applique Quilt patterns and ombre fabrics!
Janice can also hand-dye custom color ombres to your specifications. Maybe there is already one waiting for you here! Or place a special order .
