A HAWAII-THEME CHRISTMAS | |
While in Florida we were amused by the sight of Christmas decorations (tinsel, snowmen, snowflakes and the like) hanging in palm trees against bright sunshine skies, in 80+ degree weather. It made us think that a good percentage of the population celebrates Christmas without snow, ice and the need for hot toddies. So, whether you are in the tropics, or wish you were in the tropics for the holidays, here are 2 websites that will give you ideas for celebrating Christmas the Hawaii way!

READER QUESTION | | When is it too late to order for Christmas delivery??
While we cannot give you specific dates, we can tell you this: We mail orders within 24 hours of receiving them. Orders are sent using the US Postal Service. If your order weighs under 13 ounces it is sent via First Class mail. If it weighs over 13 ounces it is sent Priority Mail. Orders are mailed from Snohomish, Washington. So if your order is being mailed to Washington it can arrive in 1-2 days. The further you are from Washington, the longer it can take. During the holiday season, mail takes longer to be delivered, so it is best to order early. (Shipments to Canada and other foreign countries take longer, due to customs. Sometimes a lot longer, it may already be too late.)
Gift Certificates can be used when checking out of our shopping cart on-line, or when ordering by mail. There are no fees, and they never expire!

Aloha!
November was a particularly busy month for us: two quilt shows, in opposite corners of the country; a week-long tour of Central Florida, speaking and teaching at several enthusiastic quilt guilds; and even time to visit with family in Florida. We arrived back in Seattle to snow and very low temperatures in time for Thanksgiving.
Janice had every intention of sending a quick newsletter from Florida, but that just was an over-ambitious goal on her part. As we travel around, it is very gratifying to hear how much you enjoy our patterns, videos, and newsletters. Thank you.
Now that it is December, we want to pause a moment to wish you Peace and Happiness for the Holiday Season and the New Year. We appreciate you and love being able to share our passion for applique with you. E komo mai! Welcome home |
FLORIDA ROAD SHOW | | Enthusiastic Fans
| PRQC booth @ Tampa quilt show | We were thrilled at each stop of our Florida trip to be greeted by enthusiastic appliquers eager to show us the quilts they have made using our patterns. So that you can enjoy those quilts, Janice created a new Gallery page on our website showing the quilters and their quilts. We know you will be as inspired as we were to see what wonderful things people have made. | 2FAQ quilts @ Belleview, FL |
TIP: Send us photos of the quilts you have made using our patterns (along with your permission to use the photo) and we will add your photo to the Galleries on our website for others to enjoy.
We just received this email from The Villages in Florida: "I am in the middle of a "Chong-a-thon". Making bias for the table runner, quilting the Zebras and appliqueing Janice's Victorian Gingerbread. Am having a really good time.
To you both - Thank you for the class, the lecture and just meeting you both when you were in The Villages. Please keep those great patterns coming."
We send our Thanks and appreciation to everyone in Florida who made our trip such a pleasurable success. Mahalo. |
DRAGONFLIES IN FLIGHT | | 2 Fabrics, lots of choices
| Dragonflies in Flight |
At first blush, when all you are doing is selecting two fabrics to make a quilt, you might think your choices are quilt limited. Ah, but, look again! Any ordinary quilt can be turned into a dramatic statement by the simple choice of fabrics.
Take, for example, the use of hand-dyed fabric in the quilt at left. Janice's hand-dyed fabrics create an interesting early morning background for the dragonfly silhouettes. Gradient fabrics and watery fabrics also make wonderful backgrounds. The two quilts below were made from the same two fabrics. The one on the left has the dark blue as the applique, while the one on the right used the bright fabric for the applique. Notice the two very different looks achieved from the same two fabrics.
If in doubt, we generally suggest that you use the busier, brighter or more visually engaging fabric as your applique. That way, when your eye is attracted first to that fabric, it will also be focusing on the applique - the main feature of your quilt. But, we have seen (and show examples in our Galleries) of very successful quilts where just the opposite has been done to great effect. HINT: Consider the color of the wall where your quilt will hang. The applique fabric (the fabric on top) is the one that creates the frame for the quilt, and is the fabric that will be closest to the wall. Decide if you want a dark frame, or a light/bright frame for your quilt. This will help you decide which fabric to choose for the applique. TIP 1: Read additional fabric selection suggestions in our September 2009 e-Newsletter. TIP 2: To create the shimmer of a real dragonfly's wings, use metallic thread to quilt their wings. Be sure to look in the 2FAQ Gallery to see a few more examples of this quilt made by our customers.
Pattern: Dragonflies in Flight, 24" x 36", regularly $12.00, but for this month just $10.00.
NOTE: Our instructional video, "2 Fabric Applique Quilts with Nancy Lee Chong", includes the pattern for this cute little dragonfly quilt (11" x 17"). We also give you a pattern for the quilting lines! This quilt makes a great little companion piece for the larger quilt, and is a good practice piece while following along with the video. Learn needleturn applique or improve your skills for just $25.00 (DVD or VHS). Click on the photo for more details. |
ORCHID OASIS | | Hawaiian Quilt
|
Orchid Oasis |
Janice designed and made this quilt a few years back when she was invited to submit a quilt to an exhibit featuring quilts made with hand-dyed fabrics. The invitation came in June, the quilt needed to be finished by August! So with two striking hand-dyed fabrics in hand, this quilt was designed, hand appliqued and machine quilted in time for the exhibit.
This quilt is titled "Midnight on the Oasis". Following the exhibit we turned the design into a pattern and you can purchase it as our pattern "Orchid Oasis." HINT: When trying to determine how much fabric to purchase for any of our quilts, refer to the Fabric Requirements page on our website.
Pattern: Orchid Oasis, 42" x 42", $12.00
