I HAVE A NOTION |
|
Introducing you to the notions Nancy and Janice use.
Thread Caddy:

If you love applique, you will love this thread caddy, by Pat Campbell. It holds 48 spools of Aurifil thread (or similar spools). Using a needle, you pull each thread through the red Ultra Suede (TM) strip, so when you need a particular color, you just pull on the thread tail and snip off the length you want. No need to take spools in and out. Use the plastic pocket to hold your sewing notions.
The Caddy folds up into a compact and attractive roll that you can take with you anywhere you want to stitch.

Thread Caddy, $35.00
Thread Caddy, with 40 spools of Aurifil thread (50wt, 220 yard spools) $175.00
Cover fabrics vary.

READER QUESTION |
|
When is it too late to order for Christmas delivery??
While we cannot give you specific dates, we can tell you this:
We mail orders within 24 hours of receiving them. Orders are sent using the US Postal Service. If your order weighs under 13 ounces it is sent via First Class mail. If it weighs over 13 ounces it is sent Priority Mail. Orders are mailed from Snohomish, Washington. So if your order is being mailed to Washington it can arrive in 1-2 days. The further you are from Washington, the longer it can take. During the holiday season, mail takes longer to be delivered, so it is best to order early. (Shipments to Canada and other foreign countries take longer, due to customs. Sometimes a lot longer, so plan ahead.)
Gift Certificates can be used when checking out of our shopping cart on-line, or when ordering by mail. There are no fees, and they never expire!

WHY WE LOVE APPLIQUE |

Let Us Count the Ways
December is a month filled with lists: To Do lists, Shopping lists, Guest lists, and Wish Lists. Well, here is one more list. It is our list of the many things we like about hand applique. Chances are pretty good, that because you are reading our e-Newsletter you are convinced already that applique is fun. You know that creating something beautiful with your hands is peaceful and satisfying. But if you still need some convincing here is our list:
- Portable, take it with you anywhere.
- Few notions required -- just a needle, scissors, spool of thread and your project.
- Organic shapes and curvy lines.
- Expressive designs.
- Pictorial possibilities.
- Relaxing, even therapeutic.
- Don't need to be sitting at a sewing machine.
- Quiet.
- Can sit in a comfortable chair.
- Versatile - use on quilts, clothes, crafts.
- Unlimited styles - delicate, bold, lacy, graphic.
- No math.
Best of all, applique, no matter the style (Hawaiian, 2FAQ, Baltimore) or technique (needleturn, fused, machine), is made up of just 5 simple shapes. Once you learn a successful technique for each of these five shapes you can do ANY applique.
- Straight line
- Inside curve (see our November 2009 e-Newsletter)
- Outside curve
- Inside point (valley)
- Outside point (mountain)
TIP: In Nancy's applique classes, and in both our videos, you will learn successful techniques for all five shapes. Keep reading our e-Newsletters and you will pick up more tips to make your applique easier and even more rewarding.

PENGUIN FAMILY |
|
Fast and Fun!
Everyone loves penguins. They are so amazing and so cute! Can you believe that Janice designed this quilt without having watched the movie "March of the Penguins"? She did watch the movie while she was appliqueing it, though. So here is her first hint:
HINT 1: When you are ready to applique this quilt, rent "March of the Penguins", or "Happy Feet" (or both!), make some hot chocolate, put a fire in the fireplace, relax and enjoy. The stitching will be done before you know it.
And here is her second hint when you are ready to quilt:
HINT 2: Our favorite way to quilt this one is with snowflakes, of different sizes and shapes, placed randomly over the quilt. Use Google Images or Bing Images to find pictures of snowflakes to print and use as templates. Use metallic thread for a shimmery effect.
HINT 3: Consider making this quilt using fusible web and machine applique, for a really fast gift for a kid, any time of year!
Be sure to look in the 2FAQ Gallery to see a few more examples of this quilt made by our customers.
Pattern: Penguin Family, 24" x 36", regularly $12.00, but for this month just $10.00.

CYCLAMEN |
|
Fast Beginner Quilt
This is a plant most of you have seen, but may not know its name. It is a favorite house plant in colder climates for its colorful blooms, and is a garden plant in warmer climates.
Because the lines of this quilt are mostly gentle curves with relatively few points and valleys, this can be a good quilt for beginners, or for anyone looking for a fast applique project.
We designed this quilt so you can use just one yard of a very special hand-dyed fabric for the applique. In the quilt at right, the darker multi-colored fabric is the top applique fabric on a light background. In the quilt below, we reversed the values with a light applique on a dark background.
Pattern: Cyclamen, 36" x 36", $12.00
Here is a third option, with red applique on a white background. |
