Volunteers Needed
|

the Alliant Energy Center on October 10th. The Step Up for Down Syndrome
walk will not only help raise awareness and a significant portion of our

families, our community, and our organization. We are looking for
volunteers to help make this event successful! Some of these volunteer
opportunities the day of include: setup for the event, registration, serving
food, working the adventure course, helping in the kids area, and take down
after the walk. If you can't help the day of since you have family in town, but
would like to help out before hand we need volunteers to stock shirts and help
with pre-registration. If you're interested in volunteering please contact
Jennifer Skolaski at jenniferskolaski@gmail.com. OR if you know of
others who may be interested, please feel free to forward this message! |

Mentoring Opportunity
|
Dear
Families,
We
are writing to you to ask whether you would be interested in participating in a
program that offers UW graduate students from many departments the opportunity
to learn about issues of importance to families who have children with special
health care needs. Some of you
have helped us as mentor families in the past; others may not know about our
Maternal and Child Health-funded Leadership Program in Neurodevelopmental and
Related Disabilities, which we call MCH LEND.
For
many years, the Waisman Center MCH LEND program has benefited from our
relationships with families who have opened their homes to train and mentor our
interdisciplinary graduate students through the Family Mentor program. Year after year, family mentor has been rated by trainees as
one of the most positive and beneficial activities of their LEND training. As we survey trainee classes 5 and 10 years after their LEND
experience, they continue to note that Family Mentor was one of their most
meaningful experiences.
We
would like to ask you to consider participating in co-teaching our trainees
about issues of importance to your family. This experience is for 15 hours beginning this fall semester
and will start with a Family Mentor Orientation & Get-Together on Thursday,
October 8 at the Waisman Center for all participating families and LEND
trainees. We provide a $100 honorarium to our teaching families for their time
and sharing. We've attached a
description of the Family Mentor experience. If you are willing to be one of our mentor families this
fall, or if you have questions and would like more information, please call
Barb Wagner at 263-9672, or email
her at bwagner@waisman.wisc.edu)
and she will contact you.
Thank
you for taking the time to read about our new experience.
Sincerely,
MCH
LEND Staff

Child Care Information Center Newsletter Now Available
|
The most recent issue of the Child Care Information Center Newsletter: Children With Special Social-Emotional Needs in Child Care is posted on the CCIC website at: http://dpi.wi.gov/ccic/pdf/issue58.pdf The issue focuses on groups of children who require adaptations in their care or more background understanding on the part of caregivers. Some of those include children with health conditions, disabilities, incarcerated parents, or parents deployed in the military. Besides annotated presentations of CCIC's library of books, videos and free articles, readers are made acquainted with upcoming technical assistance to the state provided by a grant from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) at Vanderbilt University; the new vehicle alarm legislation impacting child care providers; and the Thinking Guide to Inclusion authored by Mark Sweet of Disability Rights Wisconsin. This publication is mailed to all licensed family and group child care centers in Wisconsin. Anyone in Wisconsin working in the field of child care and early childhood education may request the information resources described in the newsletter.
