SBJSA Sailors Headed for the Orange Bowl Regatta
Sailing Center
For the first time in SBJSA History our juniors are headed to the Orange Bowl Regatta, an International Youth Regatta held at the Coral Reef Yacht Club. While we are all celebrating Christmas here, our juniors will be on the road to Miami to participate in this prestigious USA Junior Olympic Sailing Event. If you have been around Sodus Bay this fall you may have noticed a group of young sailors in Optimist boats practicing their starts and mark rounding each weekend under the direction of sailing coach Scott Possee.

How is this possible? SBJSA has run a youth racing program for many years, most of the racing takes place between the many clubs comprising the Central New York Sailing Association, founded 1931. Opti, Laser and Club 420 sailors race each Tuesday and Wednesday each summer at reciprocating clubs. Centrals, is the US Sailing RSA (Regional Sailing Association) that runs the US Sailing qualifiers for youth sailors seeking to compete at a national level.

Many are aware of the US Sailing Junior Olympics that takes place at Rochester Yacht Club each summer but few realize that this is just one of many 'JOs" around the country. The Orange Bowl Regatta is the top regatta in the "JO" series and this year SBJSA will be represented.

The SBJSA participants are raising money to fund their entry fees and accommodations for the regatta. The SBJSA Board of Directors is assisting with the coaching, supplying the boats, getting the boats there and back, and coach/support boat assistance.  Because this was an unexpected event in SBJSA history the Board had to be creative in it's financial support.

It is only through the very generous contributions and support of the "Friends of Kemp Bloomer" that the funds have been made available. In memory of "Kemp" (a founding member of SBJSA) the SBJSA board approved the supporting funds and construction of a new trailer to transport the boats to Miami. It is only fitting that these contributions in memory of "Kemp" would go to support young sailors seeking to represent Sodus Bay and the Junior Sailing Association at a International Event.

A very generous outpouring of support has been given to SBJSA in memory of 'Kemp" since his passing this fall. (see below). We, the SBJSA Board sincerely thank all that made donations in "Kemps" name. It is our belief that this support for the racing team is a very appropriate tribute to "Kemp" and we hope that our curriculum will make this an annual endeavor.
 Bloomer, Charles K. "Kemp"

With great sadness SBJSA learns of the passing of long time friend and founding member of SBJSA. "Kemp" will be missed on Sodus Bay:

He was born on January 21, 1926, the son of Charles Tallman and Charlotte (Kemper) Bloomer. Kemp grew up in Newark and spent most of his life there. He served in the Air Force at the end of World War II. He graduated from MIT and worked for Mobil Chemical for many years. An avid sailor, he enjoyed racing on both Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario. His college sailing exploits earned him a place in the Intercollegiate Sailing Hall of Fame at Annapolis. Kemp was one of the founders of the Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association, PO Box 117, Sodus Point, New York 14555 to which memorials may be directed in his memory.
Who are the SBJSA Sailors headed to Miami?

Ben Furber: Resident of Sodus, NY. Age 13 son of Ted and Anne Furber. Ben has completed 2 years of optimist racing as well as Levels 1 and 2 (4 summers of SBJSA).

Patrick Walsh: Resident of Williamson, NY. Age 13 son of Patty and Gerry Walsh. Patrick has also completed 2 years of optimist racing as well as Levels 1 and 2 (4 summers of SBJSA)

Griffin Lange: Resident of Williamson, NY. Age 12 son of Brian and Deb Lange. Griffin has completed 1 year of optimist racing as well as Levels 1, 2 and 3 (4 summers of SBJSA)

Jessica Lietz: Resident of Farmington, NY. Age 11 daughter of Dan and Lorraine Lietz. Jessica has completed 2 years of optimist racing as well as Level 1 (3 summers of SBJSA)

Anyone seeking to help support these young sailors with expenses can make donations to SBJSA. Just indicate that your support is for 'Miami Bound Racers" and mail to SBJSA treasurer John Garlock,  251 East Street Pittsford, NY 14534.

Thank you.
SBJSA 2010 Curriculum/Program

If you are new to SBJSA you will find that our instructors use the US Sailing "Learn to Sail" curriculum. We offer instruction in Optimist Dinghys, Club 420's, Lasers, and US Red Cross swimming instruction. There is also and extensive racing program at each level every summer.

We have been doing this for over fifty years. New this year is an increase in the scope of the instruction and a change in the session structure for the summer. We have done away with our traditional "level" categories and have made our registration selection process more user friendly. We have also made every attempt to accommodate today's busy families with more options for the summer.

The first week of December 2009 the new registration process and summer course offerings will be posted on our website. (Just in time for Christmas). Please review the forms and make your selections early. Because of the session duration and structure it will be important to register your choices early. Certain sessions may be closed out, please plan ahead.

The Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association, Inc., founded in 1956, offers a summer day camp program that provides an opportunity for its students to enjoy summer fun while developing swimming and sailing skills, and healthy interaction with their peers. Multiple levels of sailing instruction, seven levels of swimming instruction, and two racing programs are part of the summer's activities. Enthusiastic counselors offer meaningful opportunities for kids to try new things. Lifelong friendships are often formed. We're focused on positive youth development by providing a safe environment, positive role models and quality programming.

Sincerely,

Mike Foley
