Previous camp registration forms indicated a breakfast on Saturday June 27. This will NOT take place. SBJSA altered it's schedule so that we may participate in the LAKE ONTARIO CLASSIC BOAT ROUNDUP. That event is scheduled for July 11th. Please read about the ROUNDUP in this newsletter. We hope to see you there.

2009 Classic Boat Roundup To Be Held July 10 through 12

Last year, the Sodus Bay Maritime Captains Association, along with the Sodus Bay Yacht Club and the Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association, sponsored the 1st Annual Lake Ontario Schooner Roundup on Sodus Bay.  It was reported to be a huge success by those who participated as five schooners came in for the event including two from Canada.

Well, the word got around the Lake and interest in this year's Roundup came from new sources including owners of classic boats other than schooners.  As plans developed, this led to the need for a name change in order to include the various types of vessels that are expected to join in this year's event.  Hence, the title "2009 Lake Ontario Classic Boat Roundup".  At this juncture, we will have three schooners, a brigantine, a yawl and two ketches - all considered "tall ships".   Additional vessels are possibilities depending on their likely itineraries.

A tall ship is not a strictly defined type of sailing vessel.  The term is used generally to describe a large traditional rigged sailing vessel and can include schooners, brigantines, barquentines, brigs, barques, ketches and sloops.  While our Roundup ships are smaller tall ships that are classified as Type D (less than 130 feet LOA and at least 30 feet LWL) , all are fine examples of a rich maritime history that we can appreciate and honor.

The main feature of the Roundup will be a parade of boats at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 11 when the tall ships will travel up the channel and around the Bay along with vessels from SBYC, SBJSA, the Sodus Point Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Wayne County Sheriff's Marine Patrol.   The public will view the parade from the piers and other vantage points around the Bay.  The public will also be invited to view the ships from the grounds of SBYC and SBJSA before and after the parade.

Also, beginning at 10:00 am on that same Saturday, in addition to the sponsors, other organizations have been invited to have booths on the grounds to advertise their purposes, programs and activities.  These include SOS (Save Our Sodus), Sodus Bay Historical Society, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and USSPS (United States Sail and Power Squadrons).  Sunday, July 12th is designated as a day for the captains and crews of the ships to get together to share some camaraderie, information and stories about maritime history in general and their vessels in particular.

This promises to be another successful event to promote boating safety while celebrating our maritime history.

The Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association, Inc., founded in 1956, offers a summer day camp program that provides an opportunity for its students to enjoy summer fun while developing swimming and sailing skills, and healthy interaction with their peers. Four levels of sailing instruction, seven levels of swimming instruction, and two racing programs are part of the summer's activities. Enthusiastic counselors offer meaningful opportunites for kids to try new things. Lifelong friendships are often formed. We're focused on positive youth development by providing a safe environment, positive role models and quality programming.

Sincerely,
