Summer Travelogue - We've Been Busy!

The Summer of 2012

This summer was the season of travel for Enkaustikos. We put a lot of miles on our cars and on our frequent flyer cards. As with any trip we plan, we want to make sure we pack in as much opportunity as we can. So, on our way to the fantastic 6th Encaustic Conference, in Provincetown, MA we stopped in Mashpee, MA to present Enkaustikos products to Woodruff's Art Supply. Owner, Amy Rice really knows how to pack a house. Most of the attendees had little experience with encaustic so it has prompted us to create the Project Sheet link on our website. These are very basic approaches to approaching encaustic painting, printmaking and soon a host of other step by step suggestions.

Next stop was into Canada to visit Curry's Art Store in London, Ontario for a demo that was scheduled from 1 to 3, but started during set-up when a man curiously asked what the hot palette was for. Little did we know, that was the official beginning of our demo. We did not stop till 4:30, but honestly, we could have gone another hour if it weren't for the fact that we had to make our way back to Rochester. Gabrielle, the store manager, has a friendly and talented staff, many of whom are very well acquainted with the encaustic technique. Then, it was back to Ontario, this time to Wyndham Art Supply in Guelph for another engaging presentation. Wyndham has a great classroom, where we would like to revisit for workshop opportunities. Thanks to Laura for arranging our visit.

Next stop, Seattle, WA. for a demo at Daniel Smith Art Supply. Thanks to Kelly and Deborah for allowing for the impromptu demo. Then we made a bee-line (no pun intended) to Portland, Oregon. In Portland we attended a convention hosted by C2F, one of our distributors, and we had the wonderful opportunity to talk about and demonstrate our products to many of our retailers from all across the country.  This was a great time to showcase the new items we have recently added to our line, such as the Hot Sticks Sets, the printing plates, the Slotted Brushes, and the Hot Tools.

August brought us a trip to Dallas for the Aaron Brothers convention, where once again we had the fabulous opportunity to meet with all the managers and demonstrate the many ways in which to use the Hot Sticks Sets that they have in their stores along with the sweet 4"x4" printing plate. Image transfer, printing, collage, stencil and stamping, and of course painting were all shown in record time. It's hard not to get all excited thinking about working with the paints, but I have more to tell you and fortunately for me I get to work on some color mixes this afternoon for work.

No trip to Dallas is incomplete without meeting up with Bonny and Deanna from The Encaustic Center. They did an amazing job of bringing together a wonderfully talented group of artists for Enkaustikos to present to. Plus, it was great to see where so many talented artists go to teach the many ways of working with encaustic paint.

Next week we are looking forward to meeting Jim at Blue Moon Glassworks in Austin, TX; he has our full line! We will be presenting at his store and then to San Antonio for the I.E.A EncaustiCon 2012 where we will have our educational and vending booth all set up.  We have been looking forward to this conference all summer! Next stop, Artisan Expo in Santa Fe, NM where we will offer products and demonstrations for one our original dealers, Artisan Santa Fe. Artisan's has been an Enkaustikos customer since 1996!

It has been a great summer filled with traveling, learning, creating, testing, and experimenting, but most importantly, building relationships. Thank you, Enkaustikos users - we wouldn't have these opportunities without your support!

All the best for a great Fall Season!

Charlie Ciali
Mixed media artist Charlie Ciali works in monotypes, encaustic, sculpture, and more. He began using encaustics five years ago & loves the way this medium allows an artist to build & manipulate multiple layers.
