Encaustic Monoprinting Demonstration: Recap

Encaustic monoprinting is a process which is growing in popularity, and we wanted to give our local artists a taste of its possibilities. Last month, we set up a workstation in our storefront and invited artists to come in and learn about encaustic monoprinting. Many people were new to encaustic paints, and we did our best to introduce them to the medium. We demonstrated how to make prints by manipulating encaustic paint on an anodized aluminum plate, and lifting off a print; sometimes as many as 4 passes on a single print! We showed them many fun encaustic techniques - collage, textural transfers, transfer lettering and stenciling, and showed how they can all be used together.
We really enjoyed being able to informally demonstrate and talk about encaustics with our Rochester area artists, and hope that we were able to spark their creativity.

This hog bristle brush has a shortened handle to make it more practical for encaustic painters. The overall length from tip to tip is 8-1/2". The unusual angled shape makes this brush ideal for cutting in close lines and the broad end is great for laying down color. The thickness of the bristles is perfectly suitable for use in hot wax paint and fortunately, the bristles heat quickly to work the color effectively. However keep in mind, that like any other natural hair brush, be careful not to singe or burn the bristles while using hot air assist.

Check Our Our Newly Formulated Mid Tone Gray!

The color gray is probably the most overlooked color on our palette and yet as artists we are constantly creating it in our mixes. Any time a touch of the compliment color is introduced to the mix we are in essence making a grayed out color. To the degree that we add the compliment will determine how toned down or gray a color will be. We often think of gray as that lifeless color between black and white.
If you look up gray in the dictionary here are some words you will come across: dark, dismal, monotonous, dreary, dull. Perhaps these descriptions are more apt to describe the weather, and Enkaustikos agrees! We have revised our Midtone Gray to be anything but lifeless. Our new formula is a combination of all three primaries plus white. Not only does this formula offer each primary it's compliment, it provides you with a very interactive and responsive optical mix. Considered a neutral color; Gray can serve to offer our art a resting place for the eye, a pause, some quiet, a unifier. Yet, our new Midtone Gray is also the purveyor of awakening the color it lies next to. Midtone Gray has a lot of power. It is like a chameleon. It can look yellowish next to purples, reddish next to greens, bluish next to oranges. This optical effect is enhanced because we used the primaries to make this color. Midtone Gray is a convenience color for your palette. It is opaque and because our eyes can detect the smallest shifts in colors, you will see it has a reddish violet undertone with a bluish green masstone.
