Printmaking in Encaustic - A Growing Trend!
We have recently noticed that more and more encaustic artists are utilizing encaustic paints for printmaking techniques. In response, we developed our anodized aluminum plates to help transform any pancake griddle into a printmaking plate. Place your plate on top of your heated griddle and use either Hot Sticks or Hot Cakes on top of the anodized aluminum surface. Each plate comes with a clear anodized coating to ensure there are no color reactions to the aluminum and in fact, the plate will serve as a great color mixing surface since it is being heated.
When your painting is complete, lay a sheet of printmaking paper over the surface. Using a barren, apply gentle pressure to transfer the image to the sheet and carefully lift up the paper to reveal your one-of-a-kind encaustic print. You will notice that some papers will be more absorbent than others and in turn, yield different results. We recommend using more absorbent papers for more complex printmaking techniques that involve multiple lifts.
Thanks to the anodized aluminum plates, encaustic printmaking is easier than ever before. Be on the lookout for our new anodized aluminum plates at your local art supply retailer - along with our Hot Sticks! Our aluminum plates come in a variety of sizes that all fit on top of a typical griddle and are affordable, listing between $10.99 - $29.99 Please remember to remove the protective film and be sure to keep your pancake griddle at a proper working temperature. Of course, exercising care as you work with the hot equipment.
