A great alternative to the higher priced specialty encaustic hot palette is an inexpensive pancake griddle!  Pancake griddles can be found at your local department stores, home stores, and even kitchen stores.  They are great for encaustic!  Due to the short cord, you will also need a heavy duty appliance extension cord.
